LITTLE VILLAGE — The family of a 22-year-old woman fatally shot outside her home in Little Village has launched a GoFundMe to raise money for burial and hospital costs. At about 8:43 p.m. Saturday, Abbigail Somoza was standing outside in the 2800 block of West 23rd Street when she heard a loud noise and then felt pain, officials said. She was shot in the right armpit and transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition, where she was pronounced dead, police said. “In the middle of grief and shock, Abbigail’s loved ones are also trying to manage the difficult financial burden that has come with this tragedy,” according to the GoFundMe page created by her cousin. The GoFundMe has raised nearly $8,000 of its $9,000 goal as of Tuesday evening. Somoza was a good person who made friends everywhere she went and made people laugh, said her father, Francisco Somoza. The father of three still cannot believe his daughter is gone because of senseless gun violence, he said in Spanish. His wife is devastated, he said. On Saturday, Abbigail Somoza and her mother went to a store to shop for Halloween decorations, Abbigail’s favorite holiday. When they returned, Maria Somoza asked her daughter to come outside and share her thoughts on how they could decorate a tree outside their family home for Halloween, Francisco Somoza said. That’s when the family heard a loud noise and Abbigail Somoza realized she had been shot. “My wife blames herself for not going inside the house, but how could we have known?” he said Tuesday. “They were going on about their lives, decorating the tree that we typically fill with ornaments for Christmas and Halloween.” Her father said the family wanted to leave the neighborhood, fearing gang violence. He believes his daughter was the victim of a bullet meant for someone else, but police had no additional information on the shooting. When he looks at the tree outside his family home, Francisco Somoza remembers the excitement in his daughter’s voice when she found a new figurine placed by it. Before Halloween, Abbigail Somoza and her mother had started placing little figurines by the tree, and soon neighbors started leaving more there, her father said. “She would say, ‘Dad, someone left a new figurine,'” he said. “They were looking forward to decorating it for the holidays.” A memorial for his daughter filled with balloons, candles and flowers in Abbigail’s memory now stands across from the tree, decorated with purple paper ribbons. Her father had told her to focus on her studies instead of making friends, but she joked that people gravitated toward her, he said. She leaves behind two brothers, 26 and 19, and a cousin of the same age who was like her sister, her father said. All are shocked and devastated by her loss, he said. Francisco Somoza is calling on authorities to find whoever is responsible for fatally shooting his daughter and bring them to justice.
