#Perovskite crystallizes as metallic grey to yellow cubes. It forms bathed in high temperature and pressure, found deep within the Earth’s mantle and in brown dwarf stars. Perovskite’s structure is a lure for technological developments with how easily cations can substitute into the crystal.

Fun fact: #Abelsonite was named after Phillip H. Abelson, who famously lost a duel with the Earth's mantle after insulting #perovskite. Don't mess with the mantle, my dudes.

I’m having a hard time with this one. I mean, #Abelsonite is basically fossilized chlorophyll, which is pretty cool, while my love for the Borg cube, brown dwarf dwelling, mantle-smushed #Perovskite is on record. #MinCup24 why must you vex me so?

Kaolinite vs. Abelsonite
Kaolinite is an aluminosillicate clay used in a ton of applications.

Abelsonite is a secondary mineral formed in oil shale and is apparently crystallization of the clorophyll from ancient plants!

Looking like something from outer space, this pink/red specimin is abelsonite. Beautiful coloration from pink to deep red is naturally occurring. This particular pice is an oblong cylinder, with striations throughout, there are 2 layers visible in this sample, with a skinnier core wrapped in another layer making up 3/4 of the total piece. A different sample of abelsonite shows the black oil shale that it is commonly found with covering the pink deposit of abelsonite underneath. Also cylindrical, this has a less organized arrangement from the first and sort of resembles a candy with a fruit center These are chunks of kaolinite, which are oddly shaped and remind of driveway gravel in shape, but not composition. This is the precursor to many things, from kitty litter to ceramics! White to off white coloration, clay like in feel. Hard packed pieces form the 10 or so chunks in the photo This is a solid piece of kaolinite with some of the maitrix still at the bottom. This piece is very white at the center, moving to off white at the top. Roughly the shape of a football, or maybe a conch shell, this is a fantastic specimin.

#Abelsonite straddles the boundaries between biology and geology, the only known crystalline geoporphyrin. Found in fractures, vugs, and the bedding planes of oil shale, this mineral aims to shock with brilliant reds to grey-toned purple crystals with a pink streak.

First up: Kaolinite vs rare Abelsonite.

Kaolinite gets the art vote for centuries of ceramics & kaolinite can be used for radiological dating (due to trace Uranium or Thorium). It’s even in Degas’s pastels!
