The idea that serving in the military somehow automatically makes one suited to teaching our youth is disturbing.

Decades of research have shown that even just going through basic training causes behavior changes that are necessary for warfare but that can cause difficulties . . .

While I am retired military and now abteacher, there isn't a damn thing that an "Institution of Higher Learning" taught me about teaching that I did not already know. But, I had an opportunity to instantly teach in troubled school districts under the Troops to Teachers program. Funny how I was good enough to teach where the students needed the best educators but needed a piece of paper to teach where kids needed less guidance. I'm pretty sure this story probably left out some mitigating factors that the "journalist" chose to leave out. if felt like making the effort to research it further."

The Y-axis is labeled "Salary (CAD $)" and does not have increment labels. There are two trendlines, identified as blue (inflation-adjusted salary, 2011 base) and orange (actual/projected salary). The trendlines start in the bottom left of the graph together at 2011, which is obscured by the caption. As time increases, the blue data increases more sharply compared to the orange data. At 2023, there is a pink bar showing the size of the gap, which is definitely labeled gap. There is a dotted vertical line indicating the mediator's proposal begins (2024). The trendlines end at 2027, which has another pink bar showing the gap size, which may or may not be bigger than the indicated gap at 2023. Not that the sharpest increase in inflation occurred in 2021-22, which resulted in a mild bump in the increase rate of the orange trend. There is a caption in the bottom left that reads "this graph shows how teacher salaries have fallen behind inflation. Even with the mediator's proposed increases (2024-2027), teachers would still face a significant gap compared to what their 2011 salary would be worth with inflation."

The other HUGE one is class size & complexity. The infographics (see 🧵) represent 2 of my current MS classes. They are representative of my entire school & most classrooms across the province.

Teachers should reject the contract offer from the mediator.

Alberta teachers have already lost approximately 20% of their purchasing power since 2011

The proposed 3% annual increases would still leave teachers 19% below inflation-adjusted values by 2027.
