'Man was creating disturbance,' accused tells court in PAF officer murder case
The man accused of shooting dead a Pakistan Air Force officer who intervened to stop him harassing a woman told an anti-terrorism court on Monday that he acted because "a man was creating a disturbance between us." The remark drew a sharp rebuke from the presiding judge. #### Who is accused in the PAF officer murder case? Suspect Saad Abbasi was produced before Anti-Terrorism Court Judge Abual Hasnat Zulqarnain in Islamabad. He faces charges under Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act and Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code over the killing of Group Captain Asim Tariq. #### What did the accused tell the court? When the judge asked Abbasi why he had committed the act, he replied in Urdu that he was with a girl and the officer had created a disturbance between them. The judge asked him whether he believed he had done a good deed. The court then approved a judicial remand application for the suspect. The court sent Abbasi to Adiala jail for 14 days for an identification parade, at the request of the investigating officer. It ordered that he be produced again on July 20. Two PAF officials who witnessed the incident and the woman allegedly beaten by Abbasi will take part in the parade. In its written order, the court said the offense was heinous since a member of the armed forces had lost his life. It added that the identification parade was vital to determining the suspect's guilt. Jail authorities were directed to conceal Abbasi's identity until the process is complete. He was brought to court with his face covered under heavy police security. #### How did the shooting happen? According to the First Information Report, registered on the complaint of a PAF commanding officer at Air Headquarters E-9, Tariq was travelling from his residence to Nur Khan Air Base. He saw a young man, aged between 20 and 22, harassing and beating a woman. Tariq stopped his vehicle, identified himself as a PAF officer and told the man to stop. The man initially left but returned and opened fire, hitting Tariq in the chest through his arm. Officials familiar with the investigation said Tariq saw that the accused was armed but still attempted to intervene to protect the woman. #### What else did police reveal about the accused? Islamabad's Inspector General of Police said in a press conference held late Sunday that Abbasi, who is from Abbottabad, had taken another girl to Mianwali last month. That incident was not formally reported to police, with the families instead settling the matter privately. The IG said Abbasi switched off his phone after the shooting and booked a ticket for Lahore. He got off at the Bhera rest area and returned to Islamabad in an attempt to evade police before he was arrested at a friend's residence.

Suspect in PAF officer’s killing sent on 14-day judicial remand
ISLAMABAD: An anti-terrorism court on Monday sent the suspect arrested in the killing of Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Group Captain Asim Tariq to jail on a 14-day judicial remand for an identification parade. The suspect, Saad Abbasi, was produced before Anti-Terrorism Court Judge Abual Hasnat Muhammad Zulqarnain, who approved the investigating officer's request for judicial remand to facilitate identification parade proceedings. According to the court order, the investigating officer sought 14 days' judicial custody, arguing that an identification parade was essential to determine the suspect's involvement in the case. The court observed that, based on the available record, a "heinous offence" had been attributed to the suspect in which a member of the armed forces lost his life. The court ordered jail authorities to facilitate the identification parade and directed them to conceal the suspect's identity until the process was completed. The judge directed police to produce the suspect before the court again on July 20 and submit a report after completion of the identification parade. The case was adjourned until July 20. The latest court proceedings come a day after police arrested 20-year-old Saad Abbasi in connection with the fatal shooting of Group Captain Asim Tariq and released CCTV footage tracing his movements after the incident. According to police, the footage showed the suspect leaving Islamabad for Lahore from the Faizabad bus terminal after the shooting. Additional CCTV footage allegedly showed him riding a motorcycle with the woman involved in the incident before changing his clothes at a nearby shop. Police said Abbasi, a resident of Band Khanna Road in Islamabad's Khanna police station area, had completed matriculation and previously worked as a salesman at an electronics store. Investigators said the incident began when the suspect allegedly tried to force a woman to accompany him on his motorcycle. After she resisted, an altercation broke out. Police said Group Captain Asim Tariq stopped after noticing the scuffle and intervened to help the woman. The suspect allegedly opened fire on the officer while he was seated in his vehicle before fleeing the scene. The PAF officer later died of his injuries. A police search operation led to the suspect's arrest. Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari paid tribute to the slain officer, describing his actions as an example of courage and selflessness. They offered condolences to his family and directed authorities to ensure a transparent investigation and bring those responsible to justice. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi had also sought a report on the incident and directed police to expedite the investigation. Group Captain Asim Tariq is survived by his widow, a daughter and a son. Warrants for 50 PTI leaders over Nov 26 protests
ISLAMABAD: An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Islamabad on Thursday issued arrest warrants for 50 PTI leaders, including former president Arif Alvi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, and Imran Khan’s sister, Aleema Khan, for failing to appear in a case related to protests held on Nov 26 last year. Judge Abual Hasanat Mohammad Zulqarnain expressed displeasure over the continued non-appearance of the accused despite repeated summons, expanding the list of warrants in a case registered at the Karachi Company Police Station on Nov 26, 2024. The order added 41 PTI leaders to nine others already facing similar orders. Among the prominent figures now liable to be arrested are KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur; Senators Shibli Faraz, Azam Khan Swati and Faisal Javed; and former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser. The list also includes senior lawyers Salman Akram Raja and Shoaib Shaheen; PTI Information Secretary Raoof Hassan; former federal ministers Murad Saeed and Hammad Azhar; MNA Omar Ayub Khan; and Aleema Khan, a sister of the party’s jailed founder, Imran Khan. The development comes a week after a separate anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi issued arrest warrants for Alvi and other prominent figures, including Bushra Bibi, the wife of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, in multiple cases connected to the same Nov 26 protests. Judge Amjad Shah of the Rawalpindi court also cited the repeated failure of the accused to appear before the court. According to court documents, several individuals named in the cases have not been arrested. _Published in Dawn, Aug 1st, 2025_

250 PTI workers held in Nov 26 crackdown granted bail
ISLAMABAD: The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) of Islamabad on Friday granted post-arrest bail to 250 workers of the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) who were arrested on Nov 26 when law enforcement agencies carried out a crackdown on protesters at D-Chowk. ATC Judge Abual Hasnat Mohammad Zulqarnain issued a mixed verdict on bail applications related to 13 cases filed against the PTI workers. The cases, registered across 10 police stations, involve various offences, including rioting. Out of the 400 suspects, the court granted bail to 250 but rejected the applications of 150 others. According to a breakdown of the rulings, the court granted bail to those accused who had been arrested by the Banigala Police Station, Kohsar PS, Shahzad Town PS, Noon PS, I-9 PS, Sihala PS, Shams Colony PS, Margalla PS, Secretariat PS and Aabpara PS. The protests on Nov 26 were part of a PTI-led demonstration that turned chaotic, leading to arrests and multiple cases being registered against the party workers and supporters. The accused face charges under anti-terrorism laws, with offences ranging from rioting to causing public disorder. It may be recalled that the PTI had organised the march on Islamabad, mainly from Peshawar, to press for the release of its jailed leader Imran Khan. _Published in Dawn, January 4th, 2025_

Imaan Mazari, Hadi Ali Chatta sent to 14-day judicial remand
ISLAMABAD: An Anti-Terrorism Court in Islamabad on Friday sent human rights activist and lawyer Imaan Mazari and her husband, Hadi Ali Chatta, to 14-day judicial remand after their arrest earlier in the day. The order was issued by Special Judge Anti-Terrorism Court-I, Abual Hasnat Muhammad Zulqarnain, after the couple was produced before the court following what their lawyers described as a dramatic arrest from Islamabad in the early hours of the morning. The accused were presented before the court by Investigation Officer Inspector Nadeem Mughal, along with the case record. During the hearing, the investigating officer sought a seven-day physical remand of both accused for investigation and recovery purposes. However, after examining the record, the court ruled that physical remand was not warranted at this stage. “The perusal of record depicts that physical remand does not appear warranted in the instant case,” the judge observed, while ordering that both accused be sent to judicial custody for 14 days. The court directed that Imaan Mazari and Hadi Ali Chatta be produced again on February 6, 2026. It also ordered the investigating officer to submit the challan (report) under Section 173 of the Criminal Procedure Code before the next hearing. Earlier on Friday, Imaan Mazari and Hadi Ali Chatta were arrested from Islamabad, prompting concern among legal circles and human rights activists. The arrests were carried out in the early morning hours, after which the couple was taken into custody and later produced before the anti-terrorism court.
