#academia—valuing
lol yeah, my paper was specifically about Samus Aran and how the weird erasure of her in academia is in line with mainstream culture only valuing certain portrayals of women

This is absolutely the case for me. It’s been a long time and I still wish that I had the job I trained for. But one really important thing I’ve realized is the number of my own personal strengths that academia was pretty committed to never recognizing or valuing. It has helped me to realize that.
One thing which I find telling, if not surprising: despite decades of rhetoric on transferable skills and alt-ac paths, nobody I’ve talked to about pursuing a PhD expresses much interest in them. Instead, they temper their hopes about how long they can do *this* work — even if it’s just a few years.

AI hype is poisoning academia, it's undermining learning, it's making research harder, it's corrupting knowledge, it's eroding scholarly norms, and it's monopolising funding & opportunities. It's a shame those with the power to change this aren't committed to valuing universities in the right way.
Looked at philjobs.org lately? 26/187 jobs want AI ethics as an AOS or AOC. That's 14% or nearly 1 in 7- and 17 of those are tenure track! This ratio won't reflect the current batch of early career scholars, so weaker candidates who are luckily in fashion are more likely to be hired.

Not just faculty. University administrators, trustees, etc.—in other words, pretty much the most insulated/privileged folks in academia.

Where are you? After spending your years at trustee meetings and lecture circuits talking about valuing free speech and valuing students, the silence is damning.
Faculty on here: how are you protecting your international students? Are you connecting with local immigration defense groups? How are you protecting them from being snatched off the street?

Indeed. Just checked, and I got £115 the last time I examined (2020). Ugh. Like a lot of things in UK academia, it's based on exploitation of our good will, rather than valuing our expertise.

Now would be a great time for academia to start valuing SciComm in service, tenure & promotion. The status quo of publishing in pay-walled journals for narrow audiences in the dozens & handwaving about 'broader impacts' is a threat to your funding, a broader understanding of science & public health.

Super interesting article about valuing ecological field work more - both by academia and funding agencies. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
Removing institutional barriers to long-term fieldwork is critical for advancing ecology
Long-term fieldwork is essential for ecology and conservation, but is hindered by institutional barriers, such as the publish-or-perish culture of aca…

Finally, PLOS rightly acknowledges the importance of valuing more than total bean-counting of articles.

Publish or perish has wrecked us with waves of articles, and we need all hands on deck from authors, publishers, and funders, saying "academia needs to change its incentives structure."

Yes. I think the answer to a lot of these issues is to start valuing description much, much more (as other disciplines do). JQD is a good step in this direction. But it's very telling that the best descriptive survey work is being produced outside of academia (eg Pew).

Hi friends! I’m co-organizing a symposium by Sophia University on valuing “vulnerable” voices in global studies research dealing with dilemmas on research and academia. 🌏👇

(academia about valuing inter/trans/cross disciplinary work, but then punishes you if your publication record reflects that. Also: relative absence of routes “back in” once you leave, unless you’re prepared to discount the relevant external experience and set yourself back years financially)

I 1000% agree with it needs to start in academia valuing trainees who desire a career that incorporates this.

Often it’s looked at as a weaker thing to do.

My biggest complaint with the current era is frankly that there is no moral leadership. I don’t see anyone at any high level making decisions based on the concept of doing what’s right. Of valuing truth, knowledge, empathy, and integrity. Not in govt. Not in business. Not in academia.

i will go so far as to say what qualifies for the published literary canon is still pretty eurocentric and racist so valuing those books over independently published writing is so academia-brained you are already lost to me

🌍 Inclusion in academia means valuing every voice - across borders, genders, and experiences.

This week’s International Students’ Day and International Men’s Day remind us that allyship and belonging are key to thriving research cultures.

We’re here to help build those spaces.

PHENOMENAL thread. I would add that it’s a problem of valuing outputs, results, and getting them right now, rather than valuing ongoing research processes, academia as activity
tag yourself. sigh.

(superb thread on meeting students, and colleagues, where they're at as best-practice)

i hate valuing the space in academia but also hating everything surrounding it

Each university that marketed itself as valuing and promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, accomodation, and justice faces a reckoning. How many will show their commitment to be sincere, how many passively accept the resegregation of academia?

Academia is backing away from only valuing the input of people with degrees. We need more good humanities/science communicators who are just everyday folks in order to push back against the wave of malicious disinformation online

(I really dislike talking frankly about money in academia because it often goes weird and also I have, I think, spent a lot of the past 13 years valuing my education above all else and making sacrifices to prioritise it, which have sometimes involved "eating" and "expenditure on health".)
May 30, 2026 at 11:29 AM
One thing I think about when it comes to writing in the college setting is the colonialism in "academic writing" and not valuing how our students think and write outside of the "acceptable" way we require in academia

I'm actually fairly bullish on AI and academia as AI tools demolish some of the threats to academia, such as de-valuing in-person education in favour of MOOCs and the like.
