Among many other things, a great day for academic freedom.
We have a democratic governor in Texas:

Gina Hinojosa, who staked her campaign on public education.

The governor appoints university regents, who have been destroying our universities.

This win meaningfully changes things for Texas universities, students, us early career faculty here.

Any time I look at academic starting salaries, I think about how fucking absurd academia as an institution is.

maybe I'm cynical but it doesn't make much sense to project future values for academic disciplines without any assurance of their continued material existence, or any real sense of an alternative basis for their existence, *as academic disciplines*

this is why it matters what you think knowledge is

As a 40-year resident, all hope of a blue Texas seemed purely academic. Especially after Beto. I honestly don’t know how to process this.

I’m now surrounded by highly-qualified people stuck in the academic gig economy. This session should help build a community to resist it.

I love academic budgeting. Meanwhile, let’s hire a VP of AI at $450k because future proofing or something.

Admittedly I’m just a policy academic not a law academic like my illustrious colleague quoted below, but I agree with her.

However, the important point is more that if we are at a point where we are actually asking if the HDCA applies, a line has already been well crossed.
I don't think the National Party attack ads against Chlöe Swarbrick would be actionable under the Harmful Digital Communications Act, but I DO think it's weird and sexist and gross, and AI slop ads are the lowest form of politics #nzpol

One of the huge effects of the blue takeover of state government in Texas is that the state is a huge buyer of academic materials and conservatives have used that leverage to feed garbage to their schoolchildren for years.

That can start to be undone now.
