I was telling a friend about this on Discord but it's kind of funny (I'm not sure if funny ha-ha or funny pathetic, just yet) that when I see the rare positive reference to me/my journalism/acafandom work from other fans it's in a very Dead Anime Wife/Mom Haunting The Narrative Way?

It's a fine morning when the venerable xkcd covers a point I've been making for years, along with a fair few others. Acafandom is A Thing, scholars are fans and vice versa. This is neither a denigration of academic work, nor an "improper" valuation of fandom.

mmm I will say from my personal perspective, the fannish experience I was missing here a year ago—which is captial-F cross-fandom discussion, including acafandom—has largely migrated post-election, and I'm satisfied with it. My actual "doing fandom" remains on Tumblr + Discord + AO3.

In 2015, "African American acafandom and other strangers: New genealogies of fan studies" by ‪@rawreader.bsky.social was published in #TWC20! ‬In it, Wanzo argues that "a new genealogy of fan studies is needed." Read it here:
African American acafandom and other strangers: New genealogies of fan studies | Transformative Works and Cultures
Because scholars have paid insufficient attention to race in fan studies, a new genealogy of fan studies is needed, one that includes different kinds of primary and secondary texts that have explored…

The idea that there’s not an “official” instance as such is a good thing and by design. For art, fandom.ink may be a good alternative.

Hahaha it was pretty fun! This was in 2001/2002, so acafandom was barely a thing and no one in my grad program knew anything about fandom at all. It felt like I got to do some original thinking at the time, with a pretty small body of academic work to draw from.

«Immediacy, or The Style of Too Late Capitalism» av Anna Kornbluh er ei slik bok der eg må lesa ein del av avsnitta både to og tre gonger, og slå opp ord som 'haecceity' og 'acafandom'. Men det er kanskje meininga.
Immediacy's propensity to quiver with extremities minimizes art's capacity to imaginatively break with the merely given. And this demission now compromises cultural theory too. In the history of philosophy, in work from Aristotle, Hegel, Marx, Lukács, Adorno, Raymond Williams, Stuart Hall, and others, "mediation" evokes the social process of making representation, connections, and meaning -which often reveals that the merely evident or intransitively existent does not already make sense. Immediacy style short-circuits and preempts this social process, swelling with self-identical thisness. Its reign in culture has evaded critical analysis because of its obvious appeal, but also because cultural theorists have succumbed to its intoxications. Across a wide variety of disciplines, theorists propagate the style in both form and content, denouncing abstraction while enthusing concretudes, writing in conspicuously "postcritical" modes like acafandom and autotheory to extol entanglement, the body, and tautological haecceity. Eating the real with a spoon.

idk i haven't dabbled in acafandom to know if there's much exploration into western fandom and how things changed due to the airing of this show in the west but it's something i've been thinking about a lot in the past few days

I know that my instance (fandom.ink) now federated with aethy again though it blocks images (I have to open them in a browser view which is fine); not sure about blorbo’s stance. Are you thinking images or just mostly text?
