Also any time I do a STEM in schools thing re our work with accelerometers I start by asking who plays Pokemon Go and use that as a branching off point for talking about our work with GPS/accelerometers and animal distance/behaviour. It works really well with students!

Actually the big push was smartphone computing and sensor components getting really tiny and cheap - modern consumer drones were developed by RC helicopter nerds who realized they could basically build flying smartphones
