I saw one dismember a Jay in my garden a couple of years ago. They carry the kill into cover to eat them. They are too small to fly away with them.

I agree it’s not a Red-tailed, but the tail pattern, breast pattern, and strong dark malar streaking are better for immature Broad-winged Hawk. Looks beefy like a buteo, not slim like an accipiter.

Completely off topic, but ...
We had a visitor to our garden yesterday, a sparrowhawk which had killed a pigeon. I came out and heard a wings fluttering. I looked across she was dragging her catch further from the door, but wasn't going to give it up just because I had appeared.
