We have made it to Friday, it has been a hard week for many and I hope everyone finds solace. Today we have a red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis). I have shared this before but her coloring is so unusual I thought I would share again.

I suppose PA could have “da Birds” and WA could have “the Birds” but I’d rather we keep our accipitrids disambiguated

Ravens lack certain modifications to their foot seen in owls, accipitrids, and falconids, but not cathartids that evolved for manipulating prey, including the act of killing the victim. The reason is that they are not specialised hunters, but are generalised, carnivotous-leaning opportunists.

And then there is the nutritional aspwct of plant life. Oily fruits (palm, avocado) that are foraged by hypercarnovores - such as crocodiles, monitir lizards, and accipitrids - are nutritionally appropriate for carnivore digestion.

Scored between reveal an intermediate group, that includes waterfowl, falconids, accipitrids, penguins, and kingfishers.

Anseriforms independantly evolved towards an expanded nidopallium.

All of the telluravians are intermediate or higher, in their degree of nidopallial expansion.

The wing shape of Jeholornis and Archaeopteryx, are not incompatable to the herbivorous hoatzin, either. The closest flight style iamong nonflightless birds, is common in birds of prey such as accipitrids. Though they truly fly, they strongly tend towrds saving energy by gliding, like the hoatzin.

Goshawks are accipitrids, not buteo

Pretty much. They are still examples of convergent evolution within that group (the Old World ones are members of the true accipitrids, whereas American ones are more like cousins), but not as distantly related as once thought.

Phylogeny of accipitrids (hawks, eagles, etc.): academic.oup.com/biolinnean/a... Supports harriers (genus Circus) nested within traditional Accipiter. Authors suggest splitting current Accipiter: Astur, Tachyspiza, Aerospiza, true Accipiter, and more distant Lophospiza. 🪶🧪 (📷Catanach et al.)
