It's viburnum time - our native viburnums are blooming now. This is mapleleaf viburnum (Viburnum acerifolium). Friend to pollinators and birds alike thanks to numerous flowers and juicy late summer fruit. Fabulous fall color too. #nativeplants

Viburnum acerifolium (Mapleleaf #Viburnum). A #shrub #native to eastern NA. Lobed leaves look similar to maples. Clusters of white #flowers bloom in spring, followed by red/black berries in summer. Found in mixed woods. Pollinated by #bees & flies; attracts #butterflies as well.

If it matters, my goal is to underplant with native plant understory shrubs and groundcovers so this won’t be a “lawn tree.” I have my heart set on some Viburnum acerifolium. I do not have deer in my yard, but squirrels and voles do a fair amount of damage.

I almost forgot my favorite one! I had nearly given this Viburnum acerifolium (maple leaf viburnum) up for dead! I cold and warm stratified it last year, saw the beginnings of radicle growth, but when I potted it up it did nothing! I can tell it’s the right plant, too; that seed is very distinctive.

Maple leaf viburnum, Viburnum acerifolium. One of my favorite native woodland shrubs, they are immediately recognizable. The leaves are remarkably like maple leaves, but these never grow over 6 feet that I've seen. The delightful flowers are attractive mostly to beetles. Edible berries follow.

Viburnum acerifolium | maple-leaf viburnum

A handsome plant with an accurate name. Unless it has its distinctive black fruits I can only tell it is a viburnum by vibes

Mapleleaf viburnum, Viburnum acerifolium. A very small one for now. I thought it was possibly a grape vine, as their young leaves are somewhat similar. A Viburnum is much more exciting though.
