One reason why they can't give us an actual theory is that they're going to study a whole bunch of different sweeteners with different metabolic pathways:

-artificial sweeteners (aspartame, saccharin, acesulfame-K)
-sugar alcohols (sorbitol, xylitol, erythritol)
-a rare sugar (tagatose)

Original Diet Coke tastes like Chemical.

Cola nut does have a flavor, you just associate it more with soda than nature.

The *Zero beverages use acesulfame potassium (Ace-K), which is so insanely sweeter than sugar they only need drops of the stuff to be sweet, without Diet Coke Chemical Taste.

I think almost all diet sodas taste horrible, and these days the few that have sweeteners that aren't totally nasty usually also have acesulfame K added to "improve" them
(aspartame breaks down rapidly, but the others don't always) which makes them worse.
