After completing his studies, Smallwood went on to teach music at the University of Maryland before launching his illustrious career as a composer, singer, and songwriter.Throughout his storied career, Smallwoods contributions to gospel music have been immeasurable. He has been nominated for eight Grammy Awards and has won three Dove Awards, in addition to multiple Stellar Gospel Music Awards. His songs have topped Billboards Spiritual albums chart, with the 1984 release of Psalms being a particular highlight.Smallwoods influence extends far beyond his own music, however. His compositions have been covered by some of the biggest names in the industry, including Whitney Houston, Boyz II Men, and Destinys Child. This is a testament to the timeless quality of his work and its ability to transcend genres and generations.In addition to his solo endeavors, Smallwood has also made significant contributions through his leadership roles within various musical ensembles. After disbanding his original group, The Richard Smallwood Singers, in the 1990s, he went on to found the choir Vision, which has continued to thrive under his guidance.Smallwoods legacy is not limited to his music alone.
