Just let me write one line as good as the first line of this poem with its casual, beautiful nostalgia that says everything without saying it

From Penzance to Thurso (and Marazion to Hoy)… it’s finished.

After 25 years, I’m delighted to report that the New Adlestrop Railway Atlas now covers the whole of England, Scotland and Wales in one big PDF. Every* passenger line and station.

Adlestrop.

Possibly the only poem you need for the rest of June.

Read it slowly, and let it linger...

Chetnole, illustrated above, makes Adlestrop look like Clapham Junction. Though unlike Adlestrop, Chetnole is open.

Extract from Adlestrop by Edward Thomas.
“The steam hissed. Someone cleared his throat.
No one left and no one came
On the bare platform. What I saw
Was Adlestrop-only the name.”

Happy New Adlestrop!
Update to everyone’s favourite sporadic railway map, this time with: the Northumberland Line, HS2, Scotland south of the Central Belt, and the usual host of new stations and corrections.

Yes. I remember Adlestrop— The name, because one afternoon Of heat the express-train drew up there Unwontedly. It was late June.

And now, here we are again on the last day of June. I just wish more people remembered the names of Hopkins, Edward Thomas and R. S. Thomas...

It’s 112 years since Edward Thomas took a journey during which his train came to an unexpected halt. (Four days later Archduke Franz Ferdinand met his own unscheduled stop, which, one way and another, also brought a premature end to Edward Thomas)

I'm assuming you're already aware of Gilroy Mere but if not, them, specifically Green Line or Adlestrop.

"Adlestrop—only the name."

It's late June. It's very hot.
I've written a blog about Adlestrop.

And willows, willow-herb, and grass,
And meadowsweet, and haycocks dry,
No whit less still and lonely fair
Than the high cloudlets in the sky.

The poem on my heart today: #Adlestrop, by Edward Thomas. A moment of stillness at a deserted railway station in the summer of 1914: written in early 1915, and published in spring 1917, just days after Second Lieutenant Edward Thomas, Royal Garrison Artillery, was killed at the Battle of Arras.

I like a lot of Edward Thomas’ poetry. “Adelstrop” is none the less moving for being famous

Late June 1914, just a month before the outbreak of war.

This, written in January 1915, is an acute observation holding a fleeting moment of the peace & tranquillity in counterpoint to the horror that is to come

It is an elegy for an England, and a world, changed irrevocably
