Geloof me, ik heb al in ernst overwogen het hier voor bekeken te houden of hier toch voor langere periodes mijn biezen te pakken.

Palmeraie occupy the Oued Draa, a seasonally flooded wadi draining the Atlas Mountains, for 200km from Agdz to M’Hamid, growing progressively drier the further they are from the source.

Our first stop was the Casbah des Arts in Agdz. The owner is the grandson of the last Qais (governor of a fortress). He inherited it in complete disrepair and has undertaken the massive task of bringing the casbah back to its former glory, using only local materials and traditional techniques.

There are palm trees in betwen the casbah and the mountain. The casbah is made of mud and straw and decorated with Berber motifs. The arched entrance leading to the interior of the casbah. The walls are sand-coloured and the arch has a blue and a red line on top. Green tiles cover the top of the arch. Thanks to the use of mud and straw for the walls and the traditional design of the casbah, the interior is much cooler than the outside, perfect for hot summer days. In small towns like Agdz, the Sunday souk is where real commerce happens. Farmers sell pomegranates by the sack, women trade woven baskets. Arrive hungry, eat skewers at the stalls, but avoid the frenetic main square. Go to the northern edge instead, that's where the better produce lives. #Agdz
