Astronomers detect most distant supermassive black hole-powered blazar ever: a cosmic beacon from the dawn of time
Astronomers have discovered the most distant and earliest blazar, comprised of an erupting supermassive black hole aiming its plasma jets directly at Earth. Blazars occur when supermassive black holes are surrounded by vast amounts of gas and dust that they feed on, in regions called active galactic nuclei (AGNs). The immense gravity of these cosmic titans causes the surrounding gas and dust to glow brightly, meaning that AGNs can outshine the combined light of every star in the galaxies that house them. But that isn't all; matter that isn't feasted upon is channeled to the poles of the black hole, from where it is blasted out as twin jets of plasma moving at near-light speed. These events are called quasars, but when the jets are directed straight down our line of sight, the quasar is classified as a blazar. Light from this high-energy blazar, designated Blazar OP 313, has been travelling to Earth for 8 billion years, meaning it is seen as it was just 5 billion years after the Big Bang during a crucial transitional phase in cosmic history. "Around 11 billion years ago, the universe experienced a period of peak activity known as the 'cosmic noon,' characterised by...

...m, making AGNs some of the brightest persistent sources in the universe and useful for discovering distant objects. Powerful AGNs are known as quasars, and those with jets pointed towards Earth are called blazars.

How supermassive black holes are the architects of entire galaxies
Astronomers have studied nine local galaxies to discover how shock waves from the galaxies' central supermassive black holes sculpt star formation. The team of researchers studied galaxies with active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at their hearts. These are bright and turbulent regions powered by central engine supermassive black holes with masses of millions or even billions of times that of the sun that are feeding on copious amounts of gas and dust. As energy flows out of these regions and strikes surrounding gas clouds, called the interstellar medium, it generates powerful and fast-moving "shocks." These shocks are also known as "AGN feedback," and they pump vast amounts of energy into their surroundings, shunting around gas and dust that is the raw material for star formation. While this feedback has often been attributed with ending star formation in galaxies, scientists have long suspected that this process can also drive star formation and therefore the growth and evolution of galaxies. This new research maps out how that happens. "We're seeing that black holes are not just consuming material at the centers of galaxies, but they're actively reshaping their surroundings," team member Lisa Kewley of the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian said...

www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWX5... well, AGNs are the birthers of galaxies, not surprising star formation is their work, ultimately. Like, yeah I understand that black hole seems so negative but AGNs are more than that, they are centres of gravity for galaxies, same as stars are for planetary systems.

What is it about Thursdays? That's the evening I volunteer at the library and it's also the evening practically every event I'm getting notices about takes place - plus it's the night the Symphony always plays and the AGNS is free, meaning there's a high opportunity cost for the volunteering!
