Since most studies on agri PV find positive results, it might be worth the risk, when positive signals exist.

The "VitiVoltaic" project investigates the effects of photovoltaic systems over grapevines on yields, quality, plant protection and microclimate:

However, there are still many solar farms in Germany where the photovoltaic systems are installed relatively close to the ground and the land is not used for any other (agricultural) purposes.
Unfortunately! I hope that changes soon, see agrivoltaics (agri-PV).

That's all true, we might mitigate those problems growing those plants in Agri-photovoltaic 🙂
The carbon emissions in production will be adressed by electrification anyways, but the competition to food production still remains.
Hydrogen is just too energy hungry and expensive.

Agri-photovoltaics (or Agri-PV for short) refers to the dual use of land for agricultural production and for generating electricity using photovoltaic (PV) systems. In viticulture, this combination is known as Viti-PV.
June 3, 2026 at 5:07 AM
Agri-photovoltaic (Agri-PV) systems are particularly helpful against drought through shading.
Shading leads to less water dilution, which benefits the plants.
The technology can help combat water scarcity in arid regions while simultaneously reducing CO2 emissions.

Actually it so ideal, that here in Europe a whole new method of agriculture is rising now: Agri-photovoltaic (Agri-PV)
It can increase crop yield, biodiversity (!), plus you get the electric power.
It‘s a win-win-win

Croatian cooking oil factory to source 60% of power needs from solar plants
Žito Grupa has commissioned another solar power plant, so now its two photovoltaic installations will supply 60% of the electricity needed by its oil factory in Čepin. Croatia’s agri-food company Žito Grupa completed the construction of a new 3.5 MW solar power plant at its cooking oil facility Tvornica Ulja Čepin alongside a 4.5 MW / 9 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). Projected annual electricity generation from the new facility is 5,500 MWh, compared to the facility’s total consumption of 10,130 MWh. The construction of the TUČ 2 solar facility represents a EUR 3.85 million investment According to Žito Grupa, the generated electricity will cover onsite energy demands, with any excess stored in the battery system. This makes it a prosumer. The initial solar plant had a capacity of 1.7 MW but it was not equipped with battery storage. The TUČ 2 solar facility was a EUR 3.85 million investment originally announced during the company’s initial public offering. The project was co-financed by the European Union through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, as support to firms to increase energy and resource efficiency. This new investment enhances the energy efficiency of the cooking oil facility Karlo Dudaš, President of...
