Repeat after me "Agrovoltaic projects are a win win for the environment"
"Developers who have embraced land as a living system below the panels are already seeing better outcomes,” writes soil scientist Emily Cole in an op-ed. "On the sites taking soil seriously, the land tells a different—a healthier and more productive—story.”
Op-ed: To Counter Farmland Loss, Solar Needs Soil Science
Utility-scale solar doesn’t have to eliminate productive land.

It might take a bit longer than elsewhere much to our dismay but regardless the age of solar is still coming quick

Residents press DOER/soil, water and SMART issues in public comment on Worthington solar plan
Public commenters questioned the project's SMART program status, cited projected 20-year revenues and argued agrovoltaic claims conflict with soil chemistry and groundwater protections; commenters asked the planning board to require DOER/MDAR review, monitoring and indemnification conditions.

"The agrovoltaic concept is simple: growing some kind of food in fields of solar panels. Slowly but surely, both research & successful practices are spreading, the benefits of harvesting clean energy & food together are becoming clearer, & challenges are being met."

Hell, we might as well put solar panels there! Agrovoltaic!

Fields of solar panels are increasingly becoming places of harvest, producing both clean energy and food! As research expands and successful projects grow, the exciting potential of agrovoltaics to feed the future is shining brighter. ☀️🌱 #Agrovoltaics #FutureOfFood

nuance here that's missing. Solar over parking makes sense when it won't become housing, mixed use dev, or a park. It also works really well over farms (see every agrovoltaic article) b/c of the dual benefits btwn solar/plants. Solar should go over plants even when on roofs/parking for same reason

I think the actual farm is in Hadley, and more specifics are available about that farms' agrovoltaic project are in this article.

"the economics point in the same direction as the ecology"

The ground under the #solarpv isn't mowed, but home to an array of #nativeplants, bees, moths, beetles per Argonne Lab's 358 counts. Degraded farmland benefits, as do neighboring farms b/c bees travel (up to) miles to pollinate #agrovoltaic

Maybe hot people plus adorable animals, beautiful native plants & pollinators? The agrovoltaic story is pretty sellable w/ some lambs, flowers & a monarch butterfly or bee

Tell me you have never been around cows without telling me you have never been around cows. As much as I would love to see solar panels on barn roofs, I know how woefully impractical this set up can be. As many of the Agrovoltaic projects are finding, livestock and solar panels. Do not always mix.

While not your area per se, wouldn't it stand to reason that with predictable returns from solar or wind & better yields from agrovoltaic methods, average farmers would be financially more resilient? Their land would be more productive in at least two ways
June 7, 2026 at 2:25 PM
We should be doing both honestly. Agrovoltaic is where people should shift to if they can.
