Every time I dig further into the AI bubble, I come up with more signs that much of its hype is based on half-truths and AI lab-crafted hype. In reality, AI revenues are small, everybody's unprofitable, adoption isn't there, and capacity isn't getting built.

As I went into in this week’s free newsletter and in much more detail in this premium one, it appears much of the AI bubble is a mirage. Despite hundreds of announcements of data centers in the last few years, very few actually appear to be getting built, and those that are under construction do not appear to be approaching finishing construction in 2026, or in 2027, or 2028 for that matter. It appears that the megawatt and gigawatt-scale data center dream is exactly that — a concept whipped up in the minds of overly-eager financiers and dimwitted local council members that don’t understand that these things don’t create jobs and only piss off their residents. Meanwhile, the AI software industry is a machine that turns billions of dollars into millions of dollars, and lacks any signs of significant product-market fit, even with products that are so heavily-subsidized that their VCs have to back up a few hundred million dollars every few months. To make matters worse, it appears that even the providers of AI compute lose money on every transaction, which is a huge problem considering how all of them outside of hyperscalers are funded by brutal debt and lack any real experience building hyperscale data centers, as that’s a fairly new concept to begin with. And at the top of the pile sits Anthropic and OpenAI, two deeply suspicious companies that burn billions of dollars a year with no end in sight, dependent on users that will only pay them for subsidized software, and unprofitable AI startups dependent on the very same venture capital that keeps both AI labs alive. The fascination that many have with AI is that it can make you seem productive, and produce work-adjacent content. While an experienced software engineer can hammer out useful stuff using an LLM, those relying on them are creating future disasters throughout their own companies, because LLMs are built to gas you up and convince you that both you and they have got this, and the more you use them, the less you “get” anything. And the kind of “better” that LLMs are getting still doesn’t seem to be resulting in a functional business, human replacement or viral product outside of Claude Code and ChatGPT, and in the case of Claude Code, the result of having the single-most viral product in engineering history appears to be a company that made $5 billion in four years and lost $25 billion doing so. As all of this falls apart, I predict greater rate limits, the death of multiple product categories, Anthropic closing the free version of Claude (and OpenAI seriously considering doing so too), and the collapse of multiple AI startups I’ve mentioned. And as I’ve said, very little has changed in my thesis, or the AI industry at large. Even if LLMs might be writing a lot of code, the result doesn’t appear to be better software (in fact, it seems to be getting worse!), novel software, better engineers, or any kind of innovation other than how much a company can mislead the media.
