The Trump administration's AI policy is rooted in a call for AI sovereignty, or complete domestic control over essential AI inputs, and other countries are following suit.
@kevintfrazier.bsky.social explains the many problems that could arise from strong AI sovereignty.
The Dangers of AI Sovereignty
Nations are racing toward AI sovereignty, prioritizing military control over human welfare. We need a new path before it’s too late.

totally love how carney is trying to sovereignty-wash the bullshit machine. generative ai does not suddenly become acceptable and free of all its drawbacks because it’s notionally “canadian.”
AI already supports 150,000 jobs in Canada, and more than 800,000 people work across ourbroader digital economy.

Our new strategy, AI for All, invests $350 million in Canadian AI institutions like Vector Institute, so thatAI is developed here — safely, responsibly, and to benefit of all Canadians.

Today is International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. It’s always a good day to support Indigenous sovereignty.

Many threats to our sovereignty link directly to extractive capitalism, proliferation of AI, pollution caused by data centres, and global food insecurity.

New post just out:

"Sovereignty for sale"

The UK is uniquely exposed to the power of US tech monopolies - from Palantir to AI and cloud services.

Why is it so dangerous? What are other countries doing? And what should we do?

So this, plus the French government making an open source clone of Notion ("Docs")…

It would be really funny if Europe's desire to have digital sovereignty leads to accidentally creating an AI-free alternative tech stack along the way.
Denmark’s Ministry of Digital Government is phasing out its use of Microsoft Office.. to switch to open source alternatives like LibreOffice instead.

Why? Because relying too heavily on a US tech giant for your nation’s digital infrastructure is starting to feel a bit... well, risky.

2/ There's also no real data sovereignty in an AI ecosystem dominated by U.S. tech giants. Telus may be Canadian-owned, but it has already transferred 14 petabytes of Canadian data onto Google Cloud as part of its AI strategy.

Through his AI policy & his defence policy, Starmer’s approach is dangerous & irresponsible

It enmeshes us ever deeper into dependence on the US.
We really are losing our sovereignty, but to America, not the EU.
& all shrouded by a pantomime of wanting “foreigners out”🤦‍♀️

US based, Trump-worshipping oligarchs attempting to manipulate Canadian politics and manufacture opposition to AI sovereignty is *exactly why Canada needs AI sovereignty*.

The AI apocalypse is sci-fi - but the AI-fueled oligarch apocalypse?

Already started (especially in the US).

Count us out.
🧵 Human actions and beliefs are hugely influenced by peer pressure, and not standing out from the crowd. C.f. everything from teen drug/alcohol use through cults and diffusion of responsibility for war crimes.

This will allow Meta (like X) to surround each user with a targeted, synthetic "crowd"…
This is an interesting hypothesis

Meta is very predatory with content creators, this could fit

It probably wouldn’t work with established creators but for beginner ones (who I think makes a large proportion of the contingent of creators), it may
