I remember going to the AIPAD photo show for the first time when I was just about to graduate up in NYC and our prof had introduced it like this is the place you wanna aim for, the ultimate proof of legitimacy and regard for photographers, and I was just so disgusted and disappointed by the event

not to go back to this shitshow, but I somehow missed the Ansel Adams Trust's follow up statement about the whole Moonrise colorization debacle earlier in the summer.

when you're big mad but have nothing you can sue over, you put out statements like this. lol.

Last VWIR is up. This week, I'm writing about being a working photographer - at least for me. In the links section, good stuff Jay Fram & Bill Sawalich (via their new podcast); Norman Jean Roy; Danny Clinch; AIPAD, BBC and more. Free to read!

I saw Rexroth's Iowa prints at AIPAD in New York City about 20 or so years ago and they were indeed all printed 4x4 inches. It was so cool to see them all in one place.

“From my perspective, this was done with great respect to the image and the artist.” ~ James Danziger

The Ansel Adams Trust disagrees.

Respect and commercialisation are not synonymous.

AI debate erupts over ‘colourised’ version of a classic Ansel Adams photo
The photographer’s estate has accused the dealer James Danziger of leveraging an unauthorised AI-generated piece to push a commercial venture to colourise other artists' works

A guy made an AI colorized version of an existing work without asking the estate of the dead artist and sold it. His defense? "It's public domain brah what are you gonna do about it?"

AI the tech may not be evil but AI the project sure is.

all of this is true/I agree. I think the image ends up being less aesthetically interesting—also just not as good as—Adams' b&w. Maybe its objective was doomed to fail. And yeah, it's weird to show it, but the AI discourse makes it weird to claim authorship. I'm lowkey surprised AIPAD let it in tbh

My sincere hope is that Danziger Gallery is bankrupted with a massive lawsuit. What you're seeing below is a crime--an act of theft by these assholes stealing someone else's art and turning it into garbage.

All this again begs the question why AIPAD (an official defender of photography) is permitting GenAI images in the exhibition, thereby setting a dangerous precedence. I would think prohibiting AI would be a primary defence mechanism. Likely this image is not the only GenAI in the show. /15

Again, there are a lot of reviews, but I found one in Blind Magazine by Ben Small that mentions Adams' "Moonrise" and features an image of the work. As a scholar of landscape and an art critic, I take issue with the reduction of this tradition as ornamental, but I won't get into that here. /5
