The seed capsules of ice plants (Aizoaceae) glistening like watermelon gumdrops in the early morning light.

At first I thought the plants were dappled with dew, but they’re actually covered with hundreds of transparent bladder cells that store water and sequester salt.

More gorgeous late summer colour from the Isles of Scilly. An Aizoaceae (anyone have a good resource for ID’ing them?) in walls, Tibouchina & butterflies, feral Osteospermum ‘Tresco Purple’ and Aeoniums everywhere.. I’ll be back as soon as possible #wildflowerhour

Happy to see this one out. We did a phylogenetic analysis of African Sesuvium using herbarium collections and genome skimming. We assembled ~9000 loci from orthologous genes identified from transcriptome data. We also described a new species! 🌿 #evobio #iamabotanist

As ons kyk na Peersia macradenia / Rhinephyllum macradenium, val die volgende dinge op: Dis ’n klein, lae groeiende vetplant. Dit het dik, klipperige blare wat soos ’n kamoeflering in sy habitat werk. Dit kom uit die droë Karoo en Namakwaland-streke. Die blomme is klein en fyn, tipies van die Aizoaceae (mesemb-familie).

Hier die ganze Pflanze zur Aufnahme der Blüte im Beitrag, den ich hier reposte. Die Blüten sind nur zart rosa klein zu erkennen in all den grünen feinen Blättern, die von der Amphore heraus wachsen und auf der einen Seite ca. bis zur Hälfte des Tongefäßes herunter hängen. Quelle Wikipedia via App Flora Incognita: Aptenia cordifolia ist eine Pflanzenart aus der Gattung Aptenia innerhalb der Familie der Mittagsblumengewächse (Aizoaceae).[1] Sie wird gelegentlich auch als Eiskraut, Herzblättrige Aptenia oder Herzblättrige Mittagsblume bezeichnet, weil sie (wie u. a. auch viele weitere Arten der Familie der Aizoaceae) nur während der Sonnenstunden des Tages ihre Blüten öffnet.

Titanopsis calcarea is the only mesemb that I’ve been able to keep alive for several years. I do absolutely nothing but give it a drink if it gets super hot in Summer. I don’t even cover it when it rains in Winter which is supposed to be a no no. #succulents #mesemb #Aizoaceae
