Read: Barry Hines: A Kestrel for a Knave (1968).
A wonderful little book: a simple, evocative story well told, full of great observations. A feeling of truth. Hines is new to me but I have another of his books, The Gamekeeper, which just moved up the TBR.

Hearing a couple of elements of this adaptation made me wonder whether the character of Billy would, these days, be diagnosed with ADHD.
