Hey Japan!

Iron russet ground twelve-plate akoda-shaped ridged helmet from the late Muromachi period (late 15th to mid-16th century). The helmet's rounded bowl resembles an akoda melon, formed from twelve metal plates that create distinctive ridges. The russet patina finish is characteristic of the period.

Samurai helmet with gold crescent-shaped horns and ornate shoulder guards displayed on wooden stand at Castle Expo 2025 in Yokohama.

A Kodaiji-style Koro [Incense Burner]
Momoyama - Edo period (late 16th - 17th century), Japan
Of akoda form, decorated in gold hiramaki-e and e-nashiji with scrolling peonies on a black lacquered ground, silver cover
7.8cm. high. Christies

Resting upon a lobed akoda (squash-shaped) body of jet-black lacquer (roiro-urushi), this exquisite kōro (incense burner) encapsulates the bold, expressive elegance of late Momoyama to early Edo-period decorative arts. The vessel's swelling, segmented contours are painted in radiant gold hiramaki-e (low-relief lacquer) with scrolling peonies (botan karakusa), their lush petals and undulating tendrils executed with sweeping, fluid precision. Within the foliage, select leaves are illuminated by e-nashiji—a technique where fine gold flakes are selectively sprinkled into designated lacquer zones to create a shimmering "pear-skin" texture. Surmounting the vessel is a dark, patinated silver cover pierced in a fine basketweave lattice (kagome-ami), engineered to allow delicate plumes of aromatic incense smoke to diffuse into the air while shrouding the glowing coals within.

This vessel is a pristine exemplar of Kōdai-ji maki-e (高台寺蒔絵), a seminal style named after Kyoto’s Kōdai-ji temple, founded in 1606 by Nene (Kita no Mandokoro), the widow of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Departing from the dense, hyper-labored lacquer traditions of the earlier Muromachi aristocracy, Kōdai-ji lacquerware prioritized striking visual spontaneity, graphic clarity, and dramatic contrast between gleaming gold and pitch-black ground. Developed during a pivotal era of political unification and burgeoning urban culture, these lacquer pieces catered to the refined tastes of samurai elites and tea practitioners (chajin), who favored objects that merged functional durability with immediate, theatrical beauty for display in the alcove (tokonoma) or during the incense ceremony (kōdō).
