When Tim Curry used one of my favorite words, 'aleatory,' in an interview, I just knew I had to get his memoir.

It arrived today! Yay!

Creating aleatory storytelling is NUTS. I cannot even think how you’d automate this. It’s unencodable. Good.

Thread about AI, aleatory art, and the way modernism brings people together to think
I saw this painting today (“Seine”, by Ellsworth Kelly), and I’m increasingly convinced that modernism holds an answer for us about how AI art will be received if it ever becomes pretty indistinguishable from human art.

The cut-up technique (découpé) is an aleatory narrative technique. ‘Aleatory’ means actions made by chance and its etymology traces to Latin for ‘dice’

The effect rearranges bits of copy to create new art

Began w/ 1920s Dadaists but popularized by Matty Healy’s favorite writer William Burroughs
really excited to be studying feminist surrealism this month

"In advertising it is not so much a matter of adding sex to washing machines (which is absurd) as conferring on objects the imaginary, female quality of being available at will, of never being retractile or aleatory."

why is she saying that, was the caption chosen by some kind of aleatory or cut up method, perhaps by consulting the I-Ching, it makes no fucking sense, she might as well be saying "washing machines live longer with Calgon" or "i like to move it, move it" or "who blons a dum de now"
What even is this cartoon in the Times today?

From a public speaking/preaching perspective, almost nothing feels better than bringing an aleatory element (like random little kid noises) into your prepared words in a meaningful way.
Child at the podium: “A woo woo woo.”

Mamdani: That’s how I felt when we came up with this plan. Together, we will expand the idea of what is possible in our city—and what sounds and noises we can make at a press conference.

Althusser talked about the conjuncture, the aleatory in history that Machiavelli understood as key moments of contingency where true leaders set themselves apart.

That’s what this moment is. Our future is, right now, highly contingent. Will we act for liberty or capitulate to tyranny?
"Democrats in Virginia can and in fact must defy the Virginia court ruling. The Virginia gerrymander was democratically approved, and it is now an essential bulwark as the Republicans prepare to paint the South a deep, Neo-Confederate red." www.liberalcurrents.com/democrats-ne...

Definition of: 'aleatory' is: 'from accidental causes or chance'

Back in 18th Century England, one could hear the Whigs shouting, “Aleatory, let’s get to debating”

Word of the day: aleatory — random, chance, dependent on the throw of the dice. From Latin aleator, a dice-player. You’re welcome.
