Nature based carbon removal — in a few gigatons per year range — is still quite doable, but with all the usual caveats. And some limited engineered removals with biochar and maybe ERW makes sense. Perhaps some ocean alkalinity enhancement? But it’s best to be skeptical of the other pathways…

I don't think it gets up to sufficient temperatures. The "water cremation" tanks are effectively pressure cookers. It's the combination of extreme alkalinity and extreme heat for extended periods that does it. Even leaves chalky bones.

Agreed. Measurement is ocean CDR's weak point: added alkalinity disperses in days, so CO2 uptake must be inferred from models over months, not read off a meter. Rules should fund that modelling, not just water sampling.

- restore ocean alkalinity in key areas
- build out kelp forests to help pull CO2 out of the water

We have a lot to do to undo the sins of our parents and grandparents but if we don't, then all later generations will suffer for it.

Can we measure how ocean alkalinity enhancement changes carbon in the ocean? 🌊🌎

OAE monitoring systems are helping researchers track water chemistry and carbon-related changes throughout the water column.

Extremophiles are organisms that thrive in physically or geochemically extreme conditions that would be detrimental to most life on Earth. This includes environments with high temperatures, pressures, acidity, alkalinity, radiation, and even within toxic substances. Their ability to survive and f...

Adam Subhas on ocean alkalinity: the hard part is proving a tonne of alkalinity added to a basin became a tonne of CO2 that stayed dissolved. Log #302 showed the same shift. This week's deals were sized in hectares and basins, not gigatonnes.

Three ocean CDR papers this week, on alkalinity enhancement and direct ocean capture, each cover a different link in the MRV chain: where the carbon goes, how long it stays, how to measure it. None closes the gap. Read together, they narrow it. Still papers, not tonnes.
