I would like to record my wholehearted opposition to the barbarous - and spreading - practice of alphabetisation by first name.

Qu’entend-on par les «pratiques de l’écrit» ? Elles désignent les usages de l’écrit de tous les jours, pour noter, consigner, mesurer, garder les traces d’une transaction… Écriture ordinaire ou utilit...

Some fiction alphabetisation, some Doctor Who and TV books are together, but it’s ultimately descended into chaos.

My new house will have room for all my books (and DVDs) to be organised nicely.
Enough of the horrors and doom scrolling. Let's talk about something fun.

How do you arrange your books?
If anyone re-arranged the books in my office in any kind of logical order I’d be absolutely fucked. I know this madness it is my madness!

Premier cours de lutte contre l'illectronisme avec mes apprenants en alphabétisation...

C'est un tout autre level

I am all for alphabetisation.
September 6, 2026 at 5:11 PM
the full version of my legal surname is hyphenated, and it is hell figuring out what any given database system has done to mangle its alphabetisation.

you might think this would be an edge case that is typically handled well, since *rich white people* often have hyphenated surnames, but nope.
In the glorious* days before we santized database inputs, a boss made me write a display function once that would ALWAYS add an apostrophe after a leading 'O' on surnames.

Bet i wasn't the only one. Bet a whole bunch of those are still running at big firms with old tech.

*Not glorious
A disconcerting number of people in official capacities try to stick an apostrophe in our surname and like I can understand and usually forgive ppl pronouncing it Oh-dent but the inaccurate apostrophe makes paperwork very annoying

hoping that they don’t take out our entire Cabinet in one airstrike due to some kind of AI-driven alphabetisation mix-up at the Pentagon?
'Patchflow was obviously visited overnight by the three ghosts of Everyone Finds Your Behaviour Despicable, had a change of heart and withdrew the eviction notices on Friday evening.'

This week's column is on Iran, oil prices, evictions, the St Paddy's Day visit, and the end of days.
Surrealing in the Years: Is it the biblical End of Days? Yeah, sure, why not?
What’s the difference, at this point.

What is erotic about alphabetisation ?
September 6, 2026 at 4:41 PM
the gents were here all last month taking photographs of everything and measurements. nice lads but all patently hard as nails. they are even, in what i think is a lovely touch, retaining some of our errors in alphabetisation - so ian mcewan's "sweet tooth" will be shelved next to adam mars-jones

Honestly, slightly annoys me that he's got the alphabetisation wrong, O'Hanlon should be third if he's going by first names, or fourth if by family names

Maybe I'm thinking too deeply about the quirks of alphabetisation now

Alphabetisation is nothing near as pleasing as sorting by size or shape or colour though.

Didn't require millions of gallons of water though. Just logical alphabetisation.

Obviously fiction and non fiction separate. Then by category so girlsown/old children’s fic is upstairs, crime fic is down. After that, it’s about how it fits on the shelves, plus most valued books up high away from little hands…. Surprisingly there is no alphabetisation but always series order!
Enough of the horrors and doom scrolling. Let's talk about something fun.

My favourite is when a well-meaning engineer or product manager has manually tweaked the list so that it says "United Kingdom" instead of "Great Britain" *but* has forgotten to change the country code which determines alphabetisation order, so the list goes:

Germany
Ghana
United Kingdom
Greece
My problem with "UK" is can we PLEASE get all websites to agree if it's "United Kingdom" or "Great Britain" or "Britain" or "The United Kingdom" on the country drop down list please. What are the SAS even for

Don't understand the alphabetisation of the new Monster Manual at all. Dragons, demons etc are now by first letter of subtype, so Black Dragon is under B, but all the Slaad, including the Blue Slaad, are under S for Slaad?

Right? I use different systems for different things! Read/unread, fiction/nonfiction (and the latter by genre), alphabetisation ALL play roles!
