My take on 9/11 is already sufficiently explained by Jean-Paul Baudrillard in the Spirit of Terrorism which, as I know Americans are familiar with, explains at length how our power as an empire plays with the global alterity.

Watching the Zapatista documentary from the 90s (true vintage 90s underground alterity vibes, chomsky jump scare included) and it’s actually pretty mortifying how much it’s all come home 👍

He’s drawn to people and culture he believes must be divinely destroyed and he fears being among them and experiences the sense of being among them because of empathy (again, what he views as empathy, it may be projection)

So the appeal of art is that it is something outside oneself that resonates inside, right? But slop dissolves that alterity, in that it appeals to the memory of resonance rather than to a perception of it, and so you have a desire that can be infinitely stoked and sated by the Glup Shitto factory.

Gee, that’s really interesting. I wonder if anyone has written extensively on the use of medieval as a casual pejorative in order to impose chronological alterity between ourselves and thoroughly modern phenomena that we just happen not to like. Someone should.

It does not feel coincidental that we are hearing all about how we do not need the humanities, only STEM education, right as the greatest advances in STEM in AI research raise fundamentally humanist questions about personhood, ethics, self-identity, and alterity.
