A forest full of great granite blocks, each about three feet by eight feet and two feet thick. I did not prepare words for this, just as I was not prepared on the morning I came across this field of stone in a forest at the entry to a South Carolina State Park near Greenwood. These were the stones about to be cut, chiseled and worked into place to build a grand archway entrance into Lake Greenwood State Park, in early December 1941. But that archway never came to pass. For on December 7th, 1941, Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. And the hundreds of young men in the Civilian Conservation Corps on this very ground were called back to headquarters. They left their work in the forest, to be told that the CCC was then decommisioned. They were asked to report to duty at various sites around the state for active service, as America had declared war. And they did so, almost to the man. The State of South Carolina, to commemorate their enlistment, enacted a law that would leave every stone in place, in memory of these young men. To this day, the entry to the Lake Greenwood State Park is just a few rows of great granite blocks. No one knows the fate of these young men, who moved en masse into active duty. I was not prepared for this on the day I arrived. There is no way to describe the feeling that came upon me as I read the words about these young men shipping off to war. I could only stand there, and begin to observe the quantity of stone that stretched out before me. Henge stones, each and every one. Today, we are experiencing a great loss of who we are as a nation, led by shallow, caustic creatures bearing little resemblance to men or women. They are invertebrates, even less so, and their comprehension is that of an amoeba compared to the spirit of these young men. I do not know if my home state will continue to honor those men in this way, I wish to believe they will, but we are failing fast. I hope these stones outweigh the greed of those who are claiming leadership.

#Boating ALTtex has a story 🦉
"You don't take a photograph, you make it." ≈ Ansel Adams And he meant that, in a few more ways than one. Here, precariously stands a tree I photographed in 2018. "It" is "They" actually, for its two trees joined at the base, truly sharing osmosis between them. One was cypress, that I knew. The other was a very different kind of tree & also ... at the crowns of both, mistletoe had taken hold by some fluke loong, long ago. I was there again in 2024. I walked down to the shoreline, knowing it was likely gone. It was. I've learned now the old dock's being removed. Everything in this scene then, subject-wise, is gone. The sky is gray, end of day, with a hint of hazed blue at top. The water's golden, long grass golden & fallen over at the trees bases. There's a large trunk which is bent underneath the remaining earthen bank, curving slightly upward then plunging back into the water, all earth which once surrounded it eroded away long ago. This scene is a study in entropy & for that reason is in my top five favorite works in "The America: Lost & Found" series. From my notes: "One night, a few months back in the early fall when the waters were down on Lake Marion, I was walking by its north shore and saw a ghost. On viewing it, I began to hear whispers of old arguments told by one of the voices closest to me for so many years. A very old waterlogged and siltified tree trunk, smooth and very gelatinous, almost like a giant dead salamander having lain on the bank for too many days, was beating between the piers of an old dock stretched out into the waters of the lake. On either end of that log were deep grooves worn into its circumference, old and slick as well, from the chains or cables which evidently had held it in place for far too long." That describes what are called "ghost trees"—those which, at the end of the land clearing project my grandfather was one of the supervisors for between 1936-1940, had to be staked down.They had crashed the timber market.

I recently viewed a video of a snow leopard.  It was chasing its prey (some sort of deer perhaps) and they both ran off the edge of a cliff...the leopard grabbed its prey and held on, I mean held on even as the two tumbled on rocks, over more edges, bouncing and careening to the bottom, where the leopard got to its feet with its jaws still firmly holding on to the other creature. It was an unsettling video, but also amazing.  What living things can and will do in pursuit of something.  What can be survived in the pursuit of that thing.  What can be endured.  I imagine the snow leopard didn't even do the thing I would have done, which is to look up, pause and think  whoa!  I was just waaaaaaay up there, and now I am down here and  ALIVE. And in a way, I think artists are a bit like that snow leopard, falling in pursuit Really, Lola?  Yep.  Indeed.  Hear me out. We get this vision in our heads of what is possible.  Maybe just an idea of our own, maybe seeing what others have created or are working on.  And we pursue that idea - relentlessly.  Falling, careening, bouncing, suffering, but hanging on.  Piles of attempted paintings (or pages of words written, or crushed clay or wood pieces, whatever your art may be) and yet we don't pay that any mind - we just keep pursuing.   I t may take years.  We may feel injured (unmotivated, discouraged, disillusioned) along the way but inevitably we are back at it, trying again and again and again.  We get a little closer.  A little closer still.  And maybe we never actually get our teeth around that vision we're pursuing - but we can smell it, taste it, imagine it so clearly. Abstract painting is like that, for me.  It is like a snow leopard falling - trusting I will land on my feet at the bottom with the thing in my two hands.  I'm still falling, by the way.  But never mind that - it is so close I can taste it.

Getting to the truth of things is often like a Family Circus comic. You know, the little boy who never goes as the crow flies but always up and over and down and under and around and away and back again? For me, I often have to approach the truth sideways, in a crab walk kind of way. Looking at it straight on can be disconcerting. Peering at it from the side lets just enough of it in that I can begin to process and make ready for the knowing of it. But I suppose understanding that about oneself allows a bit of patience and self-compassion for the circuitous route to the truth.

Each of us likely has scars, has had narrow escapes and close calls during our lives. And though it is tempting to live in the land of hyper-vigilance, always looking over our shoulders, I like to think we can instead become wilder, more creature-like, figuratively covered with feathers and equipped with talons, walking confidently through the world knowing our well-honed instincts will protect us from the unseen. That somehow all we’ve been through connects us with our wildness and helps to keep us safe. In this painting, a person appears to be part bird, perhaps slowly becoming feathered, taloned, plumed, exotic and wild.

Concrete dockwalls & hewn stones hand laid by young men in the years preceding World War II. An ongoing series of words & stories will be about the CCC in The Projects. 🌙 ALTtex⬇️
A series of concrete walls lay before you & extend further to the left & the right beyond the frame of this photograph. The classic fortress style hewn granite wall abutments quarried from the land around Greenwood have single-cut larger stones every 9 to 10 feet for boaters to moor their boats in place for a brief meal or visit to the State Park’s dining room & gift shop. The stone is now weathered buff & tan colors. A green lawn surrounds the old CCC building which is out of the frame, the gentle rippling waves reflecting the brilliant azure sky in deeper tones of blue. In the distance you can see the shore across the water which is forested in an old stand of loblolly pines. Greenwood State Park was still under construction, as many of our National Parks, State Parks & some Forest Service buildings were still being built in all three Parks Systems up until December 7th, 1941. On December 8th, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt decommissioned the Civilian Conservation Corps, a very successful public works program. With weeks these young men were enlisted as America entered that war.
