Amali fully embracing the pregnant look
January 19, 2026 at 9:12 PM
Amali throws herself into bath time, flinging mud with gusto and loving every minute.

With Kapei, she’s one of two orphans to come directly to our Umani Springs Unit, where both have fully embraced their second chance at life.

Amali is one in demand little nanny. So much so, Sulwe and Zigi got into a full-on head barging brawl over who got to be closest to her! In the end, it was the slightly bigger Sulwe who emerged victorious.

Amali means ‘hope’ in Swahili — and she is certainly a symbol of hope: swt.bio/amali

Two and a half years ago, Amali was rescued in desperate condition—thin, dehydrated, and too weak to stand. Today, this once-withdrawn calf has blossomed into a confident young leader.

Her name means 'hope' in Swahili, and she embodies it in every way: swt.bio/amali

Amali, meaning 'hope' in Swahili, embodies resilience. Found alone on Rukinga Ranch during the brutal 2022 drought, her family had no choice but to leave her behind. She now thrives as part of the Umani Springs herd, a symbol of strength and second chances. Read her story at: swt.bio/amali

Enkesha, Amali, and Mwana start their morning with a dusting session, while soaking up the first light of the day. The soil helps protect their skin from the sun and adds a protective layer against biting insects.

Amali's distinctive tusks curve outwards – determined by the relatives who roamed before her. She lost her herd in the 2022 drought and the tip of her trunk to a snare. But she carries a piece of her family wherever she goes.

Puddles have grown into swimming pools at Umani and the mudbath is deep enough for a dip. Not everyone is a fan of the recent wet weather: Amali flat out refused to come out of her overnight stable one morning until it had brightened up!

Umani's two youngest calves have adopted Amali as their personal climbing frame – clambering, crawling, and tumbling over her whenever she lies down. Mothered by ex-orphans Zongoloni and Sonje, Zigi and Sulwe are two of more than 90 calves born to elephants we have rescued, raised, rewilded.

For Sulwe and Zigi, sleeping is very much a one-way street. When they settled down for a midday nap, Amali stood over them. A few minutes later, when she tried to rest, they clambered all over her, using her as their personal jungle gym.

Although Kass is in my mind 24/7 I love Amali too!

She's literally caring after 5 children all by herself. She's also super pretty,,,
