People often ask me about the differences in architecture between Amazon Dynamo (the 2007 SOSP paper), DynamoDB (the AWS serverless NoSQL database), and Aurora DSQL (the AWS serverless SQL databases).

12:11AM Pacific: something is up, error rates spike
12:51: Getting worse
1:25: Looks like the hotspot is DynamoDB at US-EAST-1
2:01: It's problem with DNS resolution [Root cause!]
2:22: We've put in initial mitigations, not over yet.

Amazon DynamoDB global tables with multi-Region strong consistency now supports additional AWS Regions and cross-continent configurations

DynamoDB MRSC now in 5 more regions! That's "Multi-Region Strong Consistency" for those who don't speak AWS acronym soup. RPO of zero, pricing of ∞.

@kentik.bsky.social observed a complete drop-off in traffic to this particular AWS service beginning at 06:55 UTC. Thousands of services around the world were impacted.
