New additions to my collection: the Eofauna Paraceratherium and Anancus.
Both are 1:35 scale. The Anancus corresponds to a 6 metric ton animal, as big as a modern bull bush elephant. The Paraceratherium corresponds to a 13.5 metric ton animal.

Eofauna is going to release a figure of Anancus arvernensis. Those tusks are going to be poking out of my shelves for sure.

One thing the Eofauna Anancus model captures well is how elongated and gracile the tusks were in the actual animal, especially A. arvernensis. Look at how thin its tusks are compared to the other tusked/horned animals here.

This helped me more than anything else in visualizing the enamel bands in some extinct proboscidean tusks. Yes, even more than actual photographs.

Ik heb geen foto van het fossiel wat vandaag met de #bottenvistocht #korenbot is opgevist uit het Gastenputje in de #Oosterschelde maar ondanks dat de oogst heel mager was was het een bijzonder stuk: een stuk hielbeen van een mastodont (Anancus arvernensis)

For this #fossilfriday I’ve prepared a thread on some of the most famous fossils from the Italian region where I live (Piedmont, NW Italy). I’m talking about the Plio-Pleistocene land mammals of Villafranca d’Asti, locality that gives name to a widely used biochronological unit: the Villafranchian!

I'm continuing with the acrylic paintings I created in 2000. This one is Devourer of Giants, it features 3 Otodus megalodon, which have been attracted to some dead and bloated Anancus (drowned by a flood).

Anancus was part of a different family, but it could have some stupidly long and/or skinny tusks. Super tuskers today seem to use their extreme tusks as an honest signal of fitness rather than as practical weapons, so I think fossil proboscideans with other extremely long tusks did the same.

Sinds 1959 wordt hier in de Oosterschelde elk jaar met een mosselkotter op fossielen gevist in een aantal diepe putten. Zo zijn er in de loop der jaren al heel veel mastodontkiezen opgevist. Nederland is een heel rijke vindplaats van Anancus arvernensis, cool hè!
