Andy Yen, the CEO of Proton, had a message for an employee in the company’s security Slack channel who urged the company to at least take a few days to pentest newly written code before pushing it live. “That’s bullshit and loser thinking. Of course it’s possible to be fast and secure,” Yen wrote in the channel at the end of August. “Stop thinking always of how to be slower, and focus more on how to be faster.” In a follow-up message, Yen reiterated his point: “only losers think like that.” His ultimate message for the team was to “stop lovingly handcrafting all our code and use AI more.”

Later in the call, Butler said Yen “needs to, and he has committed to, doing better” regarding how he communicates with his employees. “Using AI effectively and pragmatically does not mean that we’ve given up on security, or good architecture, or sound software engineering principles,” he added. “We fucked up, we know we fucked up,” Butler later said in response to an employee’s comments in the meeting. “Your old job is gone,” Butler’s AI manifesto, posted to Slack, told engineers, 404 Media reported on Thursday. He wrote that not embracing AI posed an “existential threat to the success of the mission itself.”

Putting aside whether I agree with the strategy of going AI-first (I don't), attacking employees who bring up valid concerns around security as losers is unprofessional for any executive, let alone a CEO. Yen is a bully and an awful one at that and should be removed. This is all quite disappointing coming from a tech company that is supposed to be 'enlightened' and 'not like the others'. I opened a Proton account back in 2016 or so IIRC, though this one is slightly newer (2018 IIRC). I've been a paying member for pretty much all of that time because I believed in Proton's mission and thought I agreed with its values. The latest reporting, though, makes it very clear that my values are not Proton's values. I don't agree with abusing your employees. I would not tolerate such behavior from my boss in my workplace, and I *certainly* don't want to support companies who do this kind of stuff. It is a shame because many of us who are here are here *because* we are refugees of Big Tech. And now Proton is going all-in on the same bullshit that Big Tech is scrambling over, with many of the same unethical business practices, not to mention a hostile work environment to boot. Unfortunately, I am on the 2-year Unlimited plan (which renewed a few months ago), so any threats of leaving at this time are obviously idle and I will not make them. What I *can* say is that I used to speak glowingly about Proton and promote them every chance I could. I defended you when Andy made other shitty comments earlier, trying to find plausible other readings. I have repeatedly pushed my family and friends to consider switching to Proton because I thought I liked you as a company. I have a custom domain, so leaving is easy and I am only still here because of the sunk cost and the recent renewal. At this point, I will *certainly* not be recommending Proton to others and will have to provide caveats that I don't support your shitty CEO every time your name comes up. Congratulations, you have become equivalent to X and Andy is only a few shades removed from Musk in terms of how problematic he is. It is very clear to me that if you stay this course and do not get rid of Andy Yen, you will lose whatever goodwill you have left in this community. Unlike Google, you are not mainstream enough to be irreplaceable, and we *will* find other services and migrate off. I don't *want* to move. I *like* Proton's services, and it's a great peace-of-mind to know that everyday products like my email and my calendar are designed thoughtfully with privacy and security in mind. I understand Andy's frustration around moving slowly, but we are here because, at least in part, we trust that Proton is *thoughtful* about the features it creates and how those features are implemented. I put Proton somewhat in the same category as Signal, where it's not as feature-rich as its competitors, but...that's not the point, *privacy* and *security* are. Please don't throw away all of the community goodwill and trust you have rightfully earned over the years over a temporary fad such as cloud-based LLMs. That doesn't mean that LLMs (probably local ones trained on the Proton codebase) don't have a role, but I find it alarming that Andy is talking about never hiring engineers again and trusting LLMs with outputing secure and privacy-by-design code. The whole *reason* we are here is because Proton (read: Proton's employees) are thoughtful about how features are designed and think through (sometimes unintuitive) consequences before building out them out. Even if LLMs are a part of designing that codebase, Proton's employees must always be in control; there's a reason you hired them after all - they're smart!
