On this day of remembrance, it's always a good time to remember that the Neopets website had its weekly art contest running back then (which, back then, was more of a children making crude MS paint edits of their pets contest), and that the entries from that time are still archived to this day.

Sharing some of the high-def designs for the pins we sold!

Feel free to click on each one to learn more about the process behind 'em, and thanks for being with me on this journey as I look back on 6 years worth of art. 🤍

[ #FunandAims | #neopets | #art ]

Image Description: in clearly-separated boxes, eight neopets battledome items have been cleanly outlined for manufacturing into enamel pins. The items are: Blunted Qasalan Gladius Sword, Scroll of the scholar, Faerie slingshot, Nova, Scarab Ring, Obsidian Dagger, Bubbling healing Goo, and Essence of Everlasting apple.

This pin set was so much fun to design! As you can see, part of the work is doing a clean trace of the original work, as well as figuring out how to show the shading for 2d jpegs into cells for an enamel pin. I think my personal favorite was the scarab ring, but I'm biased because I love that item (and use it all the time in the battledome for dailies).

Image description: eight fully-colored codestones from Neopets.com are lined up beside an uncolored line-art base for two distinct designs. The row on top looks like it is carved out of limestone with a pale yellowish-green color, and designs have been carved into their surface. The row on bottom looks like it is carved out of some sort of semi-transparent, smooth, glassy red rock. Designs have been carved into it and appear darker red. The text reads, from top left to bottom right, "base, lu codestone, bri codestone, mau codestone, tai-kai codestone, base, cui codestone, mag codestone, vux codestone, sho codestone".

Part of the fun with the codestone set was, we had a decision to make: would it just be a simple trace, or could I flesh them out and make them look more 3-dimensional? After doing an initial trace of the original source art and realizing it was a little too plain for our liking (no shade to fans of the originals!) I was allowed to draw what I thought they looked like in more detail! I love the idea that the base codestones are carved into these limestone rocks with the pale yellow coloring, but for the more rare codestones they'd be carved into a crystal-like or seaglass rock.

Image Description: Eight designs for Neopets pins are lined up on a dark background. Two of them are of Haunted Woods characters, two of them are of Haunted Woods petpets, two of them are collections of spooky foods, and two of them are places in the haunted woods. It features a deviled steak, a frankenapple, ghost marshmallows, an almost gummy rat, brain ice cream, and a candy corn latte. Also pictured is a puppy-like zomutt surrounded by skulls, and a droolik surrounded by hearts. Count Von Roo and Sophie pose in their pins, and the last two pins depict the esophagor and brain tree.

I was SO excited to work on this set, especially because I was finally able to do a pin of my gal Sophie! She's so freaking cute and I had to draw her with her meowclops, I'm really happy with how she turned out. It's really too bad that some of these won't get to be used for anything else, especially that lil droolik. It's so cute!

Image Description: two rows of eight hand-drawn graphics depicting petpets from Neopets. In order from top left to bottom right, we have the meepit, a pink creature with a green microchip behind it, an angelpuss surrounded by pink hearts, a kadoatie meowing, a weewoo pondering a quill, a quetzal, an ona, a hasee, and a snowbunny eating a blue negg. They have each been designed with enamel pin manufacturing in mind, with the shading outlined in black.

Our first set of pins that we developed for Neopets, featuring some of the iconic petpets! I'm really happy I was able to sneak the quetzal into the set, in particular. Even if it's not as iconic as the slorg or maybe the faellie, it's one of my favorites--especially because of how much Five my strawberry shoyru loves hers! And it was fun including the detail of a microchip behind the meepit, since they work so hard to keep the site "running", or so they say!

my first impulse was to give dwight a petpet that looked like trickster but none of them had that "ah! it's perfect" fit. these were some of the ones i was considering though lol

a garfir, which is like this lion scorpion chimera petpet.

a devilpuss, which... is about what it sounds

a faerie moltenore which is like this... lava creature thing with wings

a darigan angelpuss which is like this evil kitty with red eyes.
