Extreme heatwaves caused by warming ocean temperatures are disrupting the reproductive behaviours of female angelsharks.
Despite the warmer seas, male angelsharks returned to their traditional mating grounds as normal, while females were absent.

I would say that the "non-classic looking" sharks are underrated! Species like angelsharks, wobbegongs, catsharks, lanternsharks and many more! :)

Angelsharks are among the most distinctive sharks in the ocean. With flattened bodies, exceptional camouflage, and lightning-fast ambush attacks, they spend much of their lives partially buried in sand or mud waiting for unsuspecting prey.

Angelsharks are an endangered species that can’t be caught in Brazil, but they can be imported. We identified tenders totaling tons of “peixe anjo,” a common name for angelshark.

🦈 Our Angelshark sightings in Cardigan Bay have been published in @esr-ir.bsky.social science journal!

We had 3 sightings of Angelsharks in 2024 and 2025 on our underwater cameras in Cardigan Bay. These were in the IUCN Cardigan-Caernarfon Bay Important Shark and Ray Area (ISRA).
