Golden-backed weaver
Marches of East Africa
It takes a male 2 days to weave and intricate nest.
He then waits for a female to accept the nest
Once they mate the female adds a soft nest inside, and incubates then feeds chicks and raises them solo.
He goes on to build more nests for other females.

broad-tailed hummingbirds built a nest atop a tea light on a friend's front porch. one bird fledged yesterday, and one kiddo (who I saw flying, too) was hanging around for more food from mom #birds

You think your life is 💩? Sure, amateur.

This baby lives in a little wizard hat made of its own poo, then blossoms into a lovely little fecal pellet beetle. And they wouldn't have it any other way 🥰

Webspinners have to be one of the coziest insects, at least the girlies.

Feels kind of illegal to be featured by "Nature" with a bird's nest this artificial. But here we are. 😅🪹🪶

Leaf-rolling beetle or itaya-hamaki-chokkiri (Byctiscus venustus). Japanese name “chokkiri” comes from the onomatope “choki” which is sound of scissors cutting. It cuts off the rolled leaf containing the egg onto ground. Tokikubo, Komoro, Nagano #Invertebrate #Insects

🧵🐙🌿Here is your Wednesday Wasp, one of the most fascinating things I saw in Costa Rica. It's a silk wasp, Microstigmus adelphus. They're ant-size, ~3 mm. This nest was maybe the size of a pea. Females produce silk from their abdomen (almost like spiders) to bind organic material for the nest, and--

First day on here!

How do I get added to ento and science starter packs?

I offer a beautiful psyllid (Creiis longipennis) emerging from its lerp and nymph, I guess 😍

Hello #invertefest, here is a valentine for the beautiful paper wasps I got to know when I still lived in California. They were very polite about our shared porch and never tried to come inside, never acted aggressive towards me. Sadly I think they were an invasive type, but I was fond of them.

Sorting samples today from Honduras. These are some of the most delicate cased caddisflies (Trichoptera) I’ve come across.

They construct them using tiny stones held together by silk produced from modified salivary glands

This strange looking invertebrate is a Thistle Tortoise Beetle larva. That brown thing on its back is a poop shield. Yes, you read that correctly - the shield is made of fecal matter and shed exoskeleton bits to help protect the larva from predators.

great thread and new paper on #Caddisflies #AnimalArchitecture. Using old #collections to search for #microplastics.
NEW PAPER, JUST OUT! 👀

Insects from the '70s and '80s were already collecting microplastic, decades before the term microplastic even existed. 🤯

A thread on the surprising history of this pollutant and the incredible insect larvae that helped us uncover it. 🐛

Let's dive in! 🧵👇 1/x

Black-and-red broadbills build nests that mimic flood debris accidentally caught on the river edge. Several years ago, two students at our Tropical Biodiversity field course mapped these nests along the Kinabatangan River, and made the cover of J. Trop. Biol. Cons.

How many insects can you see in this photo? Believe it or not, there are five. This termite alate fell victim to four perfectly camouflaged assassin bug nymphs (Reduvius tarsatus) Their bodies are covered with minute setae that trap grains of sand and various debris, making them virtually disappear.

This summer wasps made a nest in our garden beside our bike stand in an old tree stump. I persuaded the family to put up with it and the wasps have finally died off. This is what it looks like now. (Wasps don’t reuse their nests) #biodiversity #speirgorm @gardeningwell.ie

Because I had to drag a ladder out onto the porch - took me a while to get around to pics (there are three males on the nest at this point!) but love this nest of Western Paper Wasps (Mischocyttarus flavitarsis)

First time I've seen a queen reuse an old nest (more than one season old too!) #inverts
