Anomalith is pretty smart about using its small budget very effectively. The spaces can be quite sparse and they make some very striking scenes by honing in on that emptiness.

Playing Anomalith on survival is fun because literally every single enemy kills me in one hit. This means I get the healing item tutorial every time I die because technically the game hasn't saved a state where I've taken damage.

finished Anomalith, impressions in attached images and alt text
Finished Anomalith. 15 hours Steam time, 13 hours IGT. Note that I skipped all sidequests since they're not written by Romeo. First, for the real Romeoheads: On a scale from easy mode to inferno mode, this game is hard mode, and I don't mean the difficulty of the gameplay. The setting is very similar to Sensou-hen and Terra, but I find the conclusion bleaker than either. There are notes of triumph, but you're not getting a harem ending or Canoe. Anomalith is built out of elements otaku love. SCPs, girls with guns, secret government organizations, liminal spaces, girls with superpowers, the list goes on. It's not about these elements for their own sake, though. Romeo isn't checking off boxes in the proverbial database. He stays at eye level with the characters, because what he is interested in is depicting a person society has deemed expendable being thrust into hellish situations with no say in the matter. His language is clear and uncompromising when discussing corruption and societal ills, and the scenario does not offer empty platitudes or kowtow to notions of authority. While I suspect Romeo is less interested in real-world geopolitics than Kojima, I think there is some crossover appeal for fans of Metal Gear Solid here. I'd like to praise the plotting in particular. Despite the short runtime, a lot actually happens; by the end it felt as though I'd played through a full-length JRPG. If a plot thread or mystery is introduced, you can rest assured it's a relevant part of the scenario, and all of the characters have a part to play even if they're not a mover-and-shaker. Initially I was worried that the format would dilute Romeo's writing, but fortunately that's not the case (even if you can feel the scenario straining against budgetary limitations here and there). I suppose Romeo wouldn't take on a job he wasn't confident he could do well, anyway. If I do have a criticism it's that it can feel like Tanaka Romeo's Greatest Hits at times. If you're acquainted with his oeuvre (especially Rewrite), many elements of Anomalith will feel familiar, although it does distinguish itself by the end. Tsui no Stella is probably the more novel work all things considered... but I ended up liking Anomalith more anyway, so maybe the greatest hits are worthy of the moniker. Of course, if this is someone's first Romeo work, it means they're going to get hit with a lot of his recurring themes all at once, so maybe it was the correct decision for a mass market console game. I'm both bad at TPSes and inured to Furyu jank, so I won't comment on the gameplay -- I don't think anything I have to say would be very useful to a TPS fan sitting on the fence. I will say that I found it a lot harder than RE9 (both on the default difficulty), though maybe this is because I skipped all the side content... If you play games for the story, this one is a safe bet.
