I woke up thinking about widmerpool and a sugar bowl being poured over his head!

#anthonypowelltogether My SIL - Malcolm's sister - died in her sleep on Saturday morning and I left quickly for New Orleans, but I'm looking forward to reading your comments about the ending of this epic read. We did it. Thank you all for your smart and great company on another slow read.

And then we hear Borrit! - ‘I've never had a free poke in my life,’ he said. ‘Subject doesn't seem to arise when you're talking to a respectable woman.’ #anthonypowelltogether

Speed & precision! "His wife, a Canadian, had died about ten years before, and, while Borrit marketed fruit in Europe, their children preferred to live with grandparents in Canada. His own relations with the opposite sex took an exclusively commercial form." #anthonypowelltogether

This book opens with Nick being fitted into a handsomely tailored coat which sends me back to the opening image I keep of Widmerpool in the wrong coat at school, being shamed. #anthonypowelltogether

#anthonypowelltogether Nick’s scene with Isobel is a smart conversation with no touching, no intimacy. Even after not seeing each other for months. I know she’s pregnant, but c’mon. Didn’t seeing her melt him a little?

#anthonypowelltogether A brief interruption to let you know that A Public Space is reading Emily Wilson’s translation of The Odyssey at Substack. My first ABOUT time reading. Begins Feb. 5th.

#anthonypowelltogether Jean DuPont is almost as ubiquitous as Widmerpool. Did AP write her in to torment Nick?

The grey, flickering sequences of the screen showed with increased persistence close-ups of stocky demagogues, fuming, gesticulating, stamping; oceans of raised forearms; steel-helmeted men tramping in column; armoured vehicles rumbling over the pavé of broad boulevards. #anthonypowelltogether

Word of the day - ‘heteroclite’: abnormal or irregular. e.g. "this book suffers from the heteroclite and ill-fitting nature of its various elements" #anthonypowelltogether

I confess I have found much of this last book quite tiresome, so far. I can’t believe we were forced to endure a long, rainy, planning-related fact-finding site visit. God save us from an in-depth discussion of the Alkali Inspector’s correspondence. #anthonypowelltogether

Day 456, Aug 30, Sat: today’s pages made me wonder/worry whether Gwinnett will end up like Edward Woodward in ‘The Wicker Man’ if he goes to visit Widmerpool and Murtlock! #anthonypowelltogether

Yes. W suffers a range of assaults. Banana, sugar, Glober’s punch, the Quiggin twins’ paint. But his changing responses to these assaults illustrate that his personality does evolve throughout the novels. Nick doesn’t change much over the books. But W does. #anthonypowelltogether

Day 449, Aug 23: “What do you think of Enoch?” = Enoch Powell, UK politician known for his views on immigration & demographic change. In 1968 Powell attracted much attention for his "Rivers of Blood" speech, in which he criticised immigration to UK, esp. from former colonies. #anthonypowelltogether

Day 441, Aug 15, Fri: I’m a day ahead, sorry, but… reference to Trapnel as a “Ninetyish figure” is I think a reference to the decadent writers/artists of the 1890s - I found this article about it. internationaltimes.it/decadence-an... #anthonypowelltogether

Day 438, Aug 12, Tues - START CH 2 p30: (1) heresiarch: founder of a heresy or leader of a heretical sect (2) thaumaturge: a worker of wonders and performer of miracles; a magician (3) neophyte: (a) person who is new to a subject or activity (b) a new convert to a religion #anthonypowelltogether

Day 435, Aug 9, Sat: Yet again another book opening where Powell flings us headfirst into new waters, and we just have to sink or swim. I started to quite enjoy it, once I’d managed to resurface and catch my breath. And I learned a new word: ‘vaticinatory’ means ‘prophetic’.

and a bowl of sugar. Practically a whole dessert. There’s still time for Pamela to throw cream at him. (Although at least he’s not had his luggage 🧳 fall open on a gangplank and tumble into the sea… yet) #anthonypowelltogether

Nick is like a private detective, but he’s not trying to solve a crime, he’s trying to solve a mystery: what is the latest gossip? He knows when to talk and ask questions, and when to keep quiet and let other people talk until they spill the beans. #anthonypowelltogether

Day 401, July 6: So, Americans are all the same in substance, although they appear in different allotropes, i.e. with varying properties. Amusing idea. Perhaps this applies to all nationalities, not just Americans. Welsh, English and Scottish perhaps allotropes of Britishness. #anthonypowelltogether

Day 400, July 5: (1) 70s Powell is more likely to write something outré than 50s (or even 60s) Powell (2) Like last book I still feel the narrator is more Powell than Nick (3) Temporary Kings would be a good name for a band (4) Is Pamela bound to have an affair with Gwinnett? #anthonypowelltogether
