🚨 New paper out!
🦛 Our study explores how #Hippopotamus coped with changing environments in Greece 900–400 ka! Their teeth reveal seasonal dietary shifts and a preference for browsing, unlike modern African hippos, while southern #Greece provided a refuge during harsh glacial periods! 🦣🧪🏺

~800,000 years ago, a giant straight-tusked elephant, Palaeoloxodon antiquus, roamed Europe.

It was about twice the size of a modern African elephant:
4 m (13 ft) at the shoulder, weighing ~13 tons.

This story is NOT about these towering titans.

It's about their ᴛɪɴʏ cousins.

But wait, there's more! This is the holotype of Bison antiquus (in the drawer above the latifrons; they were found in the same part of KY too). B. antiquus is found throughout North America. #Bison is our National Mammal, and the Academy curates the holotypes of 2 of 4 of our recognized species.

The tiniest elephants ever to exist, Palaeoloxodon falconeri.

There's a simple answer to the question of how to go from enormous P. antiquus to backpack-sized P. falconeri, the 'Sicilian-Maltese dwarf elephant', in the space of ~300,000 years.

That answer is "insular dwarfism."

For #FossilFriday: holotype of the extinct Pleistocene bison species Bison antiquus, one of millions of specimens housed in the collections of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University - the oldest natural history museum in the US, now slated for permanent closure on 30 September. 🧪

Sadly, poor management by Drexel University has led to the ill-conceived decision to close the Academy Museum and sell the property. While Drexel says it's "just" the nearly 200-year old Museum closing, "the Academy remains committed to public engagement and education". Right. 🙄

Natural history #museums in the Northern Hemisphere all highlight giant deer, and in #SouthAfrica, they had a giant buffalo, with horns that were 3 metres across. They died out only 4000 years ago. 🐮📏↔️
