Here's what actually happened at the CDC (and FDA). Thanks to @by-cjewett.bsky.social for covering this story.

If you hear or see something enough times, no matter how repulsive & obviously dangerous & bad for you, you can become conditioned to accept it. Even glamorize it in your mind...

Efforts to drive down the smoking rate have worked: We're at a 75-year low for smoking and a 25-year low for vaping. Now the CDC office credited with some of that work is gone.

I met with teens in West Virginia who were sad to see their anti-vaping group cut:

The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) is rolling out a free antismoking pill called varenicline for British smokers. Research has shown that varenicline is more effective than traditional nicotine-replacement therapies such as gum or patches.

One day we’ll look back with horror and disbelief at how vaping was encouraged by doctors, antismoking campaigners and even the NHS bit.ly/4jkAfrs with no proper long term studies on its safety or dangers
Vaping safer than smoking – so why are people struggling to quit e-cigarettes?

This is why they always say the right time to quit is now. I'm not an antismoking account or an antismoking person, I respect the right of all to have bodily autonomy & I have understanding for the nature of addiction & the pleasure addictive substances provide.
Your body begins healing from the damage of tobacco smoke from the moment of your cessation of smoking. If you smoke more, you damage your body further. When you stop, your body immediately gets to work healing & recovering, evident in things like the kind of mucus from your lungs.

I've said it before but the rise in adult ADHD diagnoses is just because it stopped being socially acceptable to unknowingly self-medicate with cigarettes as a cheap stimulant and fidget toy.
I like this. Go on, let's get a few more: what's your low stakes conspiracy theory?

Smoking never went away & is never going away. People have stayed smoking tobacco. Like me even though I wish I wasn't. It will never be as ubiquitous in the mainstream as it was before science came out & antismoking campaigns did their work on the culture. There will still be smokers. Calm down.

“This high school’s program cost West Virginia less than $3,000 a year and was meant to protect teenagers in the state that has the highest vaping rate in their age group. It fell prey to U.S. government health budget cuts that included hundreds of millions of dollars in tobacco control funds”
