Entirely handmade ‘metales casados’ (copper, brass, silver) with mother of pearl and turquoise inlay all laid down on an ebonized black wood background. Depicts a seated Aztec or Mayan chieftain or priest with elaborate and dimensional ‘feather’ headdress and jewelry. These oversized incredible works of art from the final days of Los Castillo circa late 1980s to 1990s were undoubtedly designed by Antonio Castillo and produced by him and his workmen in Taxco. The largest and most elaborate example that I've seen. The pinnacle of this art form created by Chato Castillo in the 1940s, and fine-tuned and perfected by his brother Antonio Castillo over the course of 50 years!

A superb vintage 1980s 90s handmade metales casados (sterling silver, copper, brass) and azurmalachite stone inlay Mexican modernist Toucan on a Branch design pin/pendant designed by Antonio Castillo for Los Castillo in Taxco. A superb example of the 'metales casados' (married metals) metalworking technique, and with a touch of the 'mosaico azteca' stone inlay technique in the leaves on the branch! An Antonio Castillo design from the final decades of his life, and the final decades of the original Los Castillo taller in Taxco. Very heavy example, superb craftsmanship, and in great shape! Measures 2.5" tall by 2.5" wide, and weighs a substantial 37 grams total (this piece is solid, not hollowed out at back). Marked as shown, "Los Castillo Taxco" in a circle, "Metales Casados", "Sterling Mexico 925", and the Antonio Castillo post-1980 Mexican registry mark, "TA-01". Excellent vintage condition.

A huge and very rare vintage 1980s handmade metales casados and mosaico azteca Mexican modernist pre-Columbian Hunting Scene decorative tazza tray designed by Antonio Castillo for his family firm Los Castillo in Taxco Mexico. A highly stylized Hunting Scene in metales casados (married metals) and mosaico azteca (mosaic stone inlay) set in a silver-plated tazza tray foundation. I'm certain that this incredibly beautiful object was intended to be an artwork for proud display rather than a utilitarian item for everyday use, and it looks amazing standing up in a plate stand as shown in my photos! Designed by and perhaps even made by Antonio Castillo in the last quarter of his life for his family workshop Los Castillo in Taxco. I've only seen one other of this design ever in my 45+ years in the business, and that tray was in predominantly green stone not the blue of this example! Measures 15-1/2" diameter by 2-1/2" high at rim, and weighs a substantial 6 pounds and 6 ounces prior to packing. Marked at back as shown in my photos, design number "777", also "Plateado Hecho en Mexico Los Castillo Taxco TA-01". There is substantial tarnish to the silver-plate at back which I haven't touched as I think it looks great dark, and in any case it doesn't show at all when on display. Excellent vintage condition.

Antonio Castillo and Margot van Voorhies were an incredible design team as well as a happily married couple! She had great ideas, and he knew how to translate them into actual jewelry pieces. Together they produced the wonderful exotic ornate artworks characteristic of the first decade of Los Castillo. The examples shown are a necklace design number 456 by Margot, and a brooch design number 514 by Antonio. Both pieces have 1940s Los Castillo marks ie "Los Castillo Sterling Made in Mexico Taxco" along with their respective design numbers. These items sold June last year at Heritage Auctions in Texas for $1500 including the buyers premium. The new owner is a very lucky person! A rare and absolutely stunning necklace that I've only seen once before! I've seen the brooch a number of times, but this lovely shade of turquoise blue glass in Los Castillo jewelry isn't common.

An incredible vintage 1980s handmade ‘cocobolo’ Mexican rosewood box with inset sterling silver and enamel figural scene of tropical birds on branches designed by Antonio Castillo for Los Castillo of Taxco - at 14.5” by 10.75” by 3” high, this is the largest box by Los Castillo that I have in my collection, and the only example that I have seen employing this matte-surface enameling technique - marked at bottom “Los Castillo Taxco Mexico” with Antonio Castillo’s “TA-01” mark - I always wonder what these boxes were originally meant to hold, and this one is large enough to hold my tablet computer! NFS.

Looks like a Chato design adapted by Antonio in the 1980s not too long after Chato's death in the mid-1970s. Unusual use of tortoiseshell which looks wonderful with the other materials. There are two shades of silver used in this design, the darker silver forming the outline of the buckle, and the brighter lighter silver used to create the 'teeth' of the jaguar. Total of four colors of metal used in this design. The black 'eye' and interior cavity of the mouth are formed from black onyx inlay. Marked as shown, "Mexico" above the "Los Castillo Taxco" in a circle, above the Antonio Castillo post 1980 Mexican silver registry mark, "TA-01". These marks date this brooch without doubt to the post-1980 period, anytime from 1980 to Antonio's death in 2000.

In the 1980s Antonio Castillo of Los Castillo in Taxco made a few pieces of jewelry using Murano glass beads as centerpieces for his designs. I’ve only ever seen one of each design, so I am guessing that these pieces were one offs that he created using the wonderful bits of Italian glass art! Antonio made a number of similar super-long pendant necklace designs in the 1980s/90s usually with pre-Columbian stone ear plugs used as beads, but in this case he used a Murano glass bead instead with four-color metales casados pendant on brass neckring. Once again, post-1980, and likely a one of a kind!
