#Bird of the Day: Barred Antshrike (BAAN)
Pairs of barred antshrikes are monogamous & fiercely defend their territory. Where you see one, its partner is not far. And yet the male is more visible, with the eponymous black & white barring that makes it stand out as he hops through dense vegetation.

tropical birdsong is really hard because like 50% of the birds just make weird trills and rolls. so you gotta go by voice. foliage gleaners sound annoyed. antshrikes are like cartoon characters. antpittas either sound tired or like they'd be very nice to you. flycatchers want you dead 🪶🦉🧪

Antshrikes are not closely related to true shrikes but instead fall under the antbird category. In these shots you can see both the deep red eye of the FAAN and the hooked bill that is reminiscent of the carnivorous true shrikes. This is the male #bird; the female has a reddish crown of feathers

i know this sounds insane but it has worked for me before. last year i heard a cartoony noise in the mountains and told the guide i heard an antshrike and he said there weren't expected antshrikes there. we looked and it was a uniform antshrike, his first for the eastern andes where it's uncommon 🪶🧪

antshrikes, ant-tanagers, antpittas, antvireos & antthrushes! Some of these are specialists in eating ants, while others follow battalions of army ants to feast on hapless creatures as they flee from the marching ants. The CBAN ‘s range spans only from lower C. America through Colombia/Ecuador and

Birds attract a lot of attention. Thus, perhaps not too surprising that a paper by Cerqueira et al. on antshrikes in Brazil (onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....) tops the list of most downloaded Zoologica Scripta papers published in 2024 & 2025.

Almost always if you see one, the second is nearby. They bark and growl and can be quite comical. Their Tumbesian EBA is considered one of the most endangered on the planet.
