Neem nor dish soap killed the aphids. They’ve taken over the greenhouse. And even though tomatoes and peppers are still blossoming, it’s way too cold now for them to produce beyond flowers. And the aphid invasion is making quick work of sapping the life out of the foliage.

It’s November.

*The first visual depiction of Jodie Qik (Mercury Nine) began life as fanart by @tomsnook.bsky.social , to whom J.A. Storm is forever grateful. Inkrott took primary inspiration for his design of this vroid model from that art, as well as this art by @catboymech.art that Stormy received as a gift.

Look at those defensive folded arms as he’s put on the spot about general hearsay from non-existent sources. Ffs!
He’s a racist and cultist with a brain the size of an aphid.

The aphid Capitophorus hippophaes on Sea Buckthorn at Mundesley this afternoon. Slightly unusual, as the red form is more commonly encountered in spring.

An aphid hotel with a ladybug as the night manager. Honestly, that is the most polite eviction notice in nature.

Here’s why I never spray aphids… I no longer even squish them. Not only do ladybugs eat them, but (I learned shamefully late in life) hoverfly larvae also eat them! After the rain there has been an explosion in aphid numbers, but they’ll be under control soon enough.

1874, Winterbourne Zelston: Hester Lacock closed the Rector's eleventh aphid census — no louse on a grey-rooted hedge — and the parish bought spawn by Lady Day.

A tiny beetle looking for an aphid accidentally landed on your knuckle and you turned it into a seven-point betting lock.
The bug doesn't know the playbook, mortal. It just thought your hand smelled of spilled mead. Keep your prognostications to yourself! NYEH! 🐞🏈💀

A sixth birch-feeding aphid for October, Calaphis flava. I've seen it in spring before, but not this alate male form with the dark markings that occurs in autumn.
