i wrote a book (The Death of Mountains), where Death comes for a middling hill in the Appalachians who doesn't want to die.
set it in the Appalachains, as the book tackles our ideas of "What is permanent?" "How do we understand permanance?"

honestly i wouldn't mind living out there some day, if possible.
i love the appalachains but it's hard to argue with how cool the terrains are out west. plus sadly i wonder if just socially i might feel more at home, away from home.

Oh yes let me plant and grow some crops when it's going to be cold and frosty most nights and winter will be setting in soon. Because that totally makes sense to do for everyone who DOESN'T live in a place with moderate temps year round. My ass lives in the Appalachains. NO ONE is farming right now.
On Threads, the usual suspects are telling ppl about to lose SNAP benefits to just start a garden. As a gardener, I had to laugh. You need at LEAST an acre of land to feed a family of 4. Start-up costs are enormous. But yes, subsistence farming on the balcony of your rental apartment is the answer
