That's the North Island brown kiwi, *Apteryx mantelli*, very similar to the southern brown kiwi - tokoeka, *Apteryx australis*. My pic, from long ago (Stewart Island - Rakiura subspecies):

You know what this means. Only a matter of time before an open-minded apteryx gets too friendly one of the many feral North Island peacocks… nekminnit, real live laser kiwi!
Peacocks have a secret hidden in their brightly colored tail feathers: tiny reflective structures that can amplify light into a laser beam. scim.ag/3UEM2oQ
Peacock feathers can be lasers
Tail feathers can emit narrow beams of light, a first in the animal kingdom

Ceci dit, ils auraient dû se méfier, car le nom savant du kiwi est l'aptéryx. Et quand tu en manges, c'est aptéryx et périls !

1) KIWI (Genus Apteryx)

I feel like I'd be a kiwi if I was a bird. They're just these lil guys who come out at night and are a lil shy. I love em.

Apteryx spp: kiwi, kiwi

Johnny Hart did kinda go down a Christianity rabbit hole, for sure - which is weird, because of what the "B" and "C" are short for, you know?

But I still have fond memories of the apteryx, a wingless bird with hairy feathers.

Kiwis at twilight. A coloured lithograph by Joseph Wolf depicting 'Mantell's Apteryx', published in Zoological Sketches, vol. 1 (1861). The book's images were based on animals in the vivarium of the Zoological Society of London in Regent's Park.

Gattung: Apteryx

A very cool flightless bird! (Apteryx australis, considered Vulnerable). We have nothing like it here in NE US. Thanks for the video @noplanetbphoto.Sky.social !

Kiwi (Apteryx) - a genus of flightless birds endemic to New Zealand. They're the smallest of the ratites, a group that includes ostriches, emus, cassowaries, the extinct moas and elephant birds - kiwi's closest relatives, with both lineages diverging 54 million years ago. 1/6

„Experten sprechen von einem Wunder. Mit wissenschaftlichem Namen Apteryx owenii genannt, handelt es sich um die kleinste und seltenste aller Kiwi-Arten, die bisher auf den beiden Hauptinseln Neuseelands als ausgerottet galt.“

Over millions of years, this odd-ball bird has been optimizing itself for a successful lifestyle that worked just great until Aotearoa New Zealand was colonized by humans (Polynesians) around 1300 CE.

Now, thanks to introduced species, ecological disturbances, they're endangered.
