Yes, I do. I live on the island of Noepe (AKA Martha's Vineyard) the ancestral, present, and future home of the Wampanoag Tribe of Aquinnah. Grateful.

WLRP is a joint effort shared among the Mashpee, Aquinnah, Assonet & Herring Pond Wampanoag communities. I have had the great privilege of picking up a few small pieces of Wôpanâak myself because thanks in large part to WLRP I know several speakers, from ages 8 to 67.

John F. Kennedy Jr.’s ashes were scattered into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, on July 22, 1999.
The ceremony took place aboard the USS Briscoe, approximately 2.5 to 4.5 miles southwest of the island’s Gay Head (Aquinnah) community.

Wampanoag Nation, wearing an incredible turkey feather coat. Photo by Matika Wilbur. This must’ve taken years to make.

Being in Aquinnah really highlighted that cultural pattern of an agonized guilty/accusatory relationship to the spoiling of “pure” nature; a story about how “too much development” is causing tick borne disease instead of the _pattern_ of development.

In Aquinnah: the Jackie Onassis estate just gave over a huge plot of land to a develop-nothing “pristine nature” conservation trust instead of the Aquinnah Wampanoag land trust. That’s an old pattern on Martha’s Vineyard.

Caroline Kennedy and her family sold more than 330 acres of coastal land on Martha’s Vineyard to conservation groups. It comes with some caveats.

So: our local zoonoses are absolutely caused by a dysfunctional relationship with nature but via patchwork symbolic _reforestation_ not _deforestation_, and entangled with property patterns that dispossessed people like the Aquinnah Wampanoag, who are still there and would like to have land back
