I think I found my people at the Word on the Street book festival today.

Speculative climate fiction, maybe not so good fairies and tough women warriors despite the odds? Yup, I’ve good some great new reads.

I all the way quit. Good bye. I'm going to live in a cabin on an island with my cat, my tarantula, & my lizard. I'm going to make friends with mushrooms & learn to talk to voles. The trees will teach me that arboreality is the only reality.

(I broke a string on my electric guitar. I cannot today.)

The Yellow Roosevelt Avenue leaf overturned
The ardor of arboreality is an adventure we have spurned, we've spurned
A new leaf overturned
It's a new leaf overturned

Bouncy animals often adopted that stance through arboreality. I don't include kangaroo rats, but these lemurs of course, and kangaroos. And perching birds. But the latter mainly in order to hop sideways along a branch; the others to jump to another branch or to or from a trunk.
The "ninja lemur" of Madagascar is the sifaka, a famous primate known for its unique sideways-bouncing ground dance and massive acrobatic leaps. #AGoodPlace

Hell yeah. Which reminds me of Arboreality by Campbell, which also won the LeGuin and is incredible.

What could be a more perfect match than the author of the gorgeous Arboreality reading about a tree 🌲
This week on In Your Spare Time, author @rebeccacampbell.bsky.social reads post 11, "The Tree," from January of 2011.

This post is Ursula's lovely eulogy for a Christmas tree: "A real Christmas tree, a cut tree, is a ritual sacrifice. Better not to deny the fact, but to accept and ponder it."

I lost my taste for space opera years ago but here is a gorgeous novella that brings it back! Canadian author Rebecca Campbell won the inaugural Ursula K. Leguin Award for Arboreality, and the Sunburst for short fiction the last time I served on the jury.
