We do out best at the archives to uncover #HiddenHistories. Our volunteers index and digitise our records so you can access them more easily. Take the 1905 inebriates register - now digitised for you to search and view on our Flickr page: www.flickr.com/photo... #Archives30

We always want to spend more time #CataloguingCollections but we've still published descriptions online for over 14000 records, files, books, periodicals, photographs and other material in the last 12 months. Thank you so much to our amazing Cataloguing Volunteers for their help!

At present a lot of our volunteers are working on indexing our school admission registers up to 1924. We are hoping to have them all indexed and ready to go online later this year. (This is a detail from the Tay Street Admissions Register)

I suppose it is fitting that one of our largest volumes is a scrapbook to commemorate the big event that was the Dundee 800 celebrations. Do you remember any events from 1991 to celebrate our 800th birthday? #SomethingBig #Archives30

Setting up our Kangchenjunga 1955 exhibition - the photo album shown here is our newest donation.

It's the photo album of John Kempe and documents his 1953 Kangchenjunga reconnaissance- his work in 53 and 54 laid the foundation for the successful ascent in 1955. #ArchivesToday #Archives30

We don't have many hats in the Archives. This bicorn hat is part of the Guildry collection, and would have been worn by the Lord Dean of Guild. Until 1975 the LDG was a member of the Council committee. The Guildry is now a charitable organisation.

The last day of #Archives30 is #WhyArchives? They give us a tangible link to the people of the past which shows we're really not that different: which parent doesn't still write very clearly and carefully so their child can read that they love them?

This lovely colourful drawing shows the Derbyshire Miners' Welfare Convalescent Home in Skegness in 1927. You can even see the sand in the bottom right of the picture, showing just how close to the sea it was, compared with the miners' native Derbyshire.

We are a completely digital moving image archive without storage capacity. This is where partnership matters.
When UTV was bought by ITV, the archive was to move to Leeds - a politically and culturally sensitive decision that Stormont moved to prevent.

This document has an interesting alleged story. It is a proof of nobility for Charles d'Autefort dated 1714. It is said that the parchment was used as the cover for a cartridge on a French ship during the revolutionary wars. #ArchiveTravel #Archives30

Even after his release, Pigott continued to correspond with the French scientific community, and our collection includes this letter sending thanks for their help bringing his work to the attention of the Emperor [Napoleon].

#Archives30 and it's #PopularItem day.
Charlie Witherspoon, UTV's longest serving broadcaster, gathered strange & quirky tales such as this very odd ghost story (told by an even odder man).
Our folklore and ghost collection is definitely our most popular!

Our #PopularItem is C18th-19th Sun Fire Office policy registers! Fire was a real threat to property so many took out insurance against it. They weren't just insuring buildings either, here's a 1793 policy for Gilbert Pidcock who has insured a rhino. Yes, you read that correctly... 🦏 📖 #archives30

The ship was captured at Toulon by British forces in 1793 and then it made its way to the UK. The document then somehow ended up in the hands of the Wedderburn family of Pearsie. So quite a journey. #ArchiveTravel #Archives30
