Just finished Mary Zimmerman’s Argonautika this morning.

I think I need to direct a play with puppets.

Not all puppets. But puppets.

I closed a production of The Argonautika like a week ago and this version started with "Sing in us, Muse..." so frankly the timing on this video is impeccable

Not with white skin, breasts, and female clothing! It’s just a reference to a line in the Argonautika, about naiads singing hymns to Artemis, I think.

The Argonautika is a favorite epic, that’s why Dawn Treader is my favorite Narnia tale!

It even made an appearance in Apollonius of Rhodes' Argonautika (Book IV), as the Argonauts sailed their way home from Colchis in the Caucasus:

But this is a great opportunity to plug the new entry in my library, my translation of Karl Meuli's "Odyssee und Argonautika" (1921), which argued that Homer built "The Odyssey" by reworking material originally part of an oral "Argonautica." www.jasoncolavito.com/odyssey-and-...

Uncle Scrooge #203, which contained a reprint of Carl Barks’s story about Scrooge and the Golden Fleece, referring to the story of Jason and the Argonauts. The story stuck with me, and nudged me to read the Argonautika years later. I still have the comic.

Also I haven’t ever gotten around to reading the actual book. I read the Iliad translated by Merrill in college and it fucking transformed my mind. Hoping for some echo of that with his Odyssey and Argonautika and don’t want to only see Matt Fucking Damon in my mind while doing so

Now I have to choose a translation of The Argonautika - Merrill or Green ???

YES. Mary Zimmerman's Argonautika is FINALLY being published. One of my very favorite nights at the theatre.

I really miss Argonautika. Mary Zimmerman, why won't you be my best friend and we can make theatre in magical wooden boxes EVERY DAY.

I first saw her speaking at STC about Argonautika, and I wanted more than anything to sit at her feet and learn from her about theatre.
