Antique ornament of sea spirit figure. This small figure has an anthropomorphic body and a fish replacing the head. Spirits of the sea 'Adoro' belongs to the traditions of the South Eastern Solomon Islands, San Cristobal, Malaita and Santa Catalina. Examples of sea spirit images are in the Barbier Müller Museum, Metropolitan Museum and New Orleans Museum End of 19th beginning of 20th century , 21 x 14 cm Makira, Solomon Islands In the cultural traditions of Makira (San Cristobal Island) and the southeastern Solomon Islands, an Adoro (more commonly spelled Adaro) represents a powerful, complex class of supernatural sea spirits.These figures hold deep religious, mythological, and practical significance within the local cosmology:The Dual Soul and Ocean GhostsAccording to traditional Arosi cosmology on Makira, a human being possesses two souls:The Aunga: The benevolent, good part of the spirit that departs peacefully from the physical world upon death.The Adaro: The shadow or malevolent component of the soul that stays behind. It often morphs into an aquatic ghost, lingering in the ocean and interacting directly with the living. The Adaro are not viewed purely as evil, but rather as unpredictable elemental forces that control the ocean's bounty and dangers.Shark Metamorphosis: These spirits frequently inhabit sharks or other dangerous marine life. Once localized inside an animal, the spirit retains human understanding and can actively choose to help or punish their living relatives.Hazards for Fishermen: Folklore warns that Adaro travel through dangerous atmospheric phenomena like waterspouts and rainbows. They are feared by fishermen because they are believed to shoot poisonous flying fish like spears at canoes during sudden storms. Placed on family altars, inside specialized canoe houses, or worn by key individuals, the plaques acted as protective visual markers.
